When all three of them finally met, Latonia saw the way Catheleen treated Camilla and realized just how close the two really were. Catheleen was friendly enough, maybe because her own family ran a business—she was used to these kinds of interactions.
Latonia’s father wasn’t in business, but both she and Catheleen had grown up adjacent to money and power. In those circles, people called each other friends or even siblings, but more often than not, it was all surface level, just polite exchanges hiding favors, self-interest, and schemes. Something as genuine as the friendship between Catheleen and Camilla felt rare, even priceless.
Camilla poured tea and smiled at Latonia. “I’m not much of a drinker. Tea, okay?”
“Don’t be so formal,” Latonia replied, raising her own teacup. “There’s no need for all that. You’re Catheleen’s friend. I only feel bad I couldn’t do more for you this time.”
Camilla shook her head. “Even if none of this had been a misunderstanding, just knowing you were on my side and how professional you were helped me so much. Thank you, really.”
Catheleen laughed, picked up her cup, and clinked it with theirs. “Alright, enough with the thank-yous. You both matter to me—so from now on, you’re my people.”
Latonia looked at Camilla and grinned. “Deal. From now on, you’re stuck with me.”
“Thank you, Latonia,” Camilla said sincerely.
They were still chatting when Latonia’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, then at Camilla, who was laughing and putting food on Catheleen’s plate, looking completely at ease.
“I’ll step out for a call,” Latonia said quietly.
Catheleen waved her off. “Go ahead.”
Once outside the private room, Latonia answered, her tone light. “Well, this is rare. What’s got you calling me today?”
Lambert’s voice came through, straight to the point. “Where are you having dinner?”
“I’m heading over now. Think up a reasonable excuse for me to show up.”
Before Latonia could protest, he hung up.
She’d always thought she knew Lambert—always serious, completely focused, never mixed up with women. For him, life was all about work and making money. Yet now, for some reason, he was interested in Camilla.
What was he trying to do? And why make her responsible for coming up with a cover story?
She went back to the room, still trying to figure out what to say. Catheleen waved her over, grinning. “Latonia, come try this one, it’s amazing!”
Latonia returned the smile, joining their conversation for a minute, stalling as long as she could while she searched for the right words. Finally, worried Lambert might arrive any minute, she just blurted it out. “Camilla, there’s something I should let you know. Lambert is on his way here.”
