Divorce Him, Then Dazzle novel Chapter 71

“You’re such a disappointment.” Adah pulled her hand back, her voice sharp. “Did you forget everything your father and I taught you? How could you do this to us?”

Camilla pressed a hand to her cheek. Tears burned in her eyes, but her gaze was steady. The sting on her face was nothing compared to the pain in her heart.

A policewoman suddenly stepped in, moving Camilla gently behind her. “You can’t just hit someone in a police station,” she said coolly.

“I’m disciplining my daughter,” Adah shot back. “What, are you going to arrest me for that?”

Lean glared, his brows drawn tight. “Go home, now.”

“She’s not going anywhere,” a clear, strong voice replied, echoing through the hall.

Everyone turned toward the entrance.

Camilla’s eyes widened. “Latonia?”

Latonia walked in, all business in a sharp suit and heels, her presence confident and unruffled. She came straight to Camilla and looked at the officer. “I’m Camilla’s lawyer,” she said. “From this moment on, I’ll be handling everything for her.”

She gave Camilla a warm, reassuring smile, then glanced at Lean and Adah. “Touch my client again—parent or not—and we’ll report it as assault,” Latonia said.

Adah looked furious, but she tried to hold on to some dignity. “I’m her mother. I’m allowed to teach my own child. You’re bringing up the law with me?”

The officer stepped between them. “Let’s keep it down, please. This is a place of work. Don’t interfere.”

With that, she led Camilla away. Latonia followed right behind.

Adah and Lean hurried after, but a staff member stopped them just outside the hallway. “Sorry, you’ll have to wait here.”

She hung up and stared at her phone, lost in thought. Lambert really was interested in Camilla. He’d called her personally and told her to rush over. Latonia had spotted him outside the station earlier—hanging back, out of sight, letting her be the one to step in. But he’d made sure Latonia was there. With Lambert behind her, Latonia knew she had protection. There was really nothing for her to worry about now.

Thanks to Camilla’s perseverance, the police started an official case without delay.

By the time Latonia and Camilla stepped out into the evening, darkness had already fallen. The cold cut through the air. Adah and Lean rushed over the moment they saw them.

Adah barely waited until she was within earshot. “Camilla! So this is it, huh? Ignoring your parents, thinking you can do whatever you want?”

Camilla pulled her puffy coat tighter around her body. The wind bit her skin, but it still didn’t compare to the chill she felt inside.

A part of her wondered if things would be different, if her real parents were here. Would they fuss over her injuries, feel sorry for everything she’d been through? Would they protect her or at least comfort her, instead of blaming her for all the trouble?

Latonia stepped in front of Camilla, blocking her from her parents. “She needs a break,” she said firmly. “She’s your daughter. Why aren’t you comforting her? She just survived violence and abuse. She’s the one who’s hurt here. Is this really the way you want to treat her?”
