Lean spoke up, his voice sharp. “This is nonsense. We’re leaving. Now.”
Before Camilla could even respond, the woman cop near her interjected, “You’re their parents, aren’t you? Good, you’re just in time. You really need to go home and teach your son a lesson. Look at what he’s done to your daughter.”
Adah sighed. “Officer, married couples argue. Things get heated. It doesn’t mean anyone needs to make a federal case out of it.”
The officer seemed ready to keep going, but Camilla touched her arm gently. “They’re my parents. Daniel isn’t their son.”
The woman stared at them, clearly thrown off. “You’re her parents? And you aren’t even worried about your own daughter?”
“Of course we’re worried about her,” Adah said. “But this is between us. If Daniel did something wrong, she can talk to us first. Why drag this into a police station?”
Right then, Daniel came out from the back, looking annoyingly pitiful. “Mom, Dad, you’re here. Good, you need to settle this. She’s accusing me of domestic violence. Do I really seem like that kind of man?”
Adah didn’t hesitate for a second. “Don’t worry, Daniel. We’ll talk to her. I’m sorry you’ve had to go through this.”
The policewoman looked at the whole group, her eyebrows tight. “What’s wrong with all of you? Are you seriously just ignoring your daughter?”
Camilla turned to her. “Thank you, but please, don’t mind them. I’ve made up my mind. I’m not taking it back.”
Lean’s temper flared. “Ridiculous. Haven’t you embarrassed us enough?”
Camilla stared back at him. “How did I embarrass anyone? The person who hurt me, who put his hands on me, was Daniel. He nearly strangled me. Did any of you bother to ask how I was?”
Daniel jumped in, frustrated. “That only happened because you fought back. You’re my wife. I wanted to— I wanted to sleep with you. Is that a crime?”
Camilla glared at him. “You need to understand something. I’m divorcing you. Even if I wasn’t, if I say no and you force me, that’s rape.”
Daniel’s patience snapped. “If you keep lying about me, I’ll tell everyone about you and Owen!”
It had to be Lambert, right? He would have the resources for something like this.
But why? Why would he even do that?
Camilla went quiet, and Daniel took it as a sign she was guilty. He turned quickly to Lean. “See, Dad? I told you. I haven’t even blamed her for cheating, and now she wants to press charges against me.”
People around them started staring, some even whispering. Lean’s pride had never handled anything like this—he couldn’t take people talking about his family.
With a quick motion, he barked, “Everyone, home. Now.”
Camilla stood her ground. “I said I’m pressing charges.”
A sharp smack split the air. Lean’s palm cracked across Camilla’s cheek.
