Divorce Him, Then Dazzle novel Chapter 77

Latonia watched from the sidelines, finding it impossible not to let out a mental sigh. She hadn’t spent all that much time around Lambert, but they bumped into each other at family gatherings or around the holidays. Seriously, who would ever dare ask Lambert to wait for them? Even if someone was bold enough to try, he’d just look over with that frosty stare of his, hardly ever wasting words. Sometimes, if he was in a decent mood or the person was close enough, he might offer a gruff, “What now?”

But today, when Camilla called his name, Lambert actually asked, “What’s wrong?”

Just three simple words, but Latonia could practically hear all the tenderness packed inside them. That was the difference.

Camilla glanced at her, and Latonia offered a knowing smile. Suddenly she understood why people loved playing matchmaker. And here she was, witnessing it all in real life.

Lambert suddenly looked over, catching Latonia off guard. She straightened up, feeling exposed.

“Should I… maybe give you guys some space?” she blurted out.

“No, you don’t have to go,” Camilla replied quickly, shaking her head. She’d only looked at Latonia for a tiny spark of courage before talking to Lambert.

And truthfully, she didn’t want to talk to Lambert right now. Being alone with him was even worse. But there was something she had to address, no matter what.

Lambert turned his attention back to her, his voice lower and quieter than before. “Alright, say what you need to say.”

Camilla took a steadying breath and spoke up. “Could I ask… are those two bodyguards from Mr. White?”

She was completely avoiding calling him Lambert now. Latonia couldn’t help feeling a bit let down.

Lambert took a step in her direction. Camilla instantly retreated, putting even more distance between them. The whole thing made Latonia anxious just watching.

Lambert seemed to pick up on her worries. “They’re mine,” he said. “After what happened on the yacht, I figured someone might give you more trouble. I just wanted them to look out for you.”

“That’s really not necessary,” Camilla said, her tone gentle but firm. “I appreciate the gesture, Mr. White, but I can’t trouble you like that. Please, just let them go back.”

Lambert’s eyes flickered with something Latonia couldn’t read.

She stepped in, unable to stay quiet. “Camilla, and about Daniel…”

Latonia sighed. “My own marriage is a mess, so I’m not really in a place to give relationship advice. But Camilla’s a good person… if you two ever get a real shot, don’t ever make her cry again.”

“I know what I’m doing,” he replied.

Back inside, Latonia found Camilla standing in the living room, looking uncomfortable and a bit lost.

“Cammie, you’ve had a long day. Get some sleep.”

“Latonia, I’m sorry,” Camilla said suddenly. “Do you think I’m being ungrateful?”

Latonia gave her a warm smile and nudged her gently toward the bedroom. “I get where you’re coming from, and I respect your choice. You know, you might actually be the first person who’s ever turned Lambert down.”

“He’s a good man,” Camilla said softly. “But it feels like we’re from two totally different worlds. There’s no way I could ever repay him for all this.”

“Don’t overthink it,” Latonia told her, sitting with her on the edge of the bed. “Just get some rest tonight, okay? We’ve still got the police station to handle tomorrow.”
