The first bite was a revelation. The fresh sweetness of the food mixed perfectly with the richness of the broth. Camilla almost couldn’t believe how good it tasted.
She was already shocked to see Lambert cooking in the kitchen. The fact that his food was actually delicious seemed almost unreal.
“This is amazing,” Camilla said, her voice a little rushed.
“If you like it, have another bowl.”
“Okay.” She smiled, feeling a little bashful.
Watching them, Latonia realized she was seeing a completely different side of Lambert than ever before. He always looked so calm, collected, impossible to shake. He carried the entire future of the Whites on his back, never showing weakness, never complaining, never letting himself act on a whim. From the outside, all anyone saw was a master strategist, a man who never failed.
But Latonia knew there was a loneliness to someone like him. Even living at the top came with its own kind of emptiness. What he really wanted was someone to share his life with, someone who could let him finally breathe and find joy in the simple things.
Maybe, she thought as she glanced at Camilla, that person could actually be her.
Camilla was beautiful, but her beauty wasn’t loud. There was a quiet confidence about her that made other people feel calm. The two of them just looked right together, so much so it was almost hard not to stare.
Lambert had made three dishes and a soup. Everything looked and smelled incredible. If Camilla hadn’t seen it for herself, she never would have believed it. He was just… kind of perfect, wasn’t he?
Latonia found something light to talk about, so the three of them chatted comfortably through dinner, and Camilla slowly relaxed. The awkwardness faded, replaced by laughter.
When they finished eating, Camilla was about to help clear up when Latonia’s phone rang.
“I’ll just take this call,” Latonia said, stepping out of the room.
Lambert reached for the plates, and Camilla automatically moved to help. Somehow their hands arrived at the same plate at the exact same time.
Their hands touched. The contact startled her, a jolt of reflex that made her yank her hand back. Camilla immediately pulled her hand back, backing away several steps, almost as if she’d been burned.
Lambert’s hand, compared to hers, was so warm. It brought back the memory of that night on the yacht, the heat of his palm on her waist. She tried so hard to forget, but the memory kept sneaking up on her, always catching her off guard, always making her heart twist with feelings she didn’t want to face.
“If you need anything, just call me,” Lambert said. “Try to get some rest.”
Camilla stayed quiet, so Latonia answered for her, “Okay.”
Lambert headed toward the door. Just as he reached the hallway, Camilla found her courage.
“Wait.” Her voice was soft, nearly trembling.
Lambert paused and turned around, surprise flickering in his eyes.
Latonia blinked as well. It was the last thing she expected—until now, Camilla had acted like she couldn’t wait to keep her distance.
Lambert looked at Camilla, waiting. “What is it?”
