“Just wait for Catheleen,” Lambert said, glancing inside again. “I’m heading out.” He turned to leave, but right before he disappeared down the hall, he shot one last look back.
Catheleen arrived a moment later, running down the hallway and nearly bumping into Latonia.
“Latonia, where’s Cammie? Is she okay?”
Latonia stopped her with a gentle hand. “Slow down. Hey, let me ask you. How much do you really know about Cammie’s family?”
“Her adoptive parents?” Catheleen scoffed. “They preach morals, but it’s all for show. And Barbara… she’s always working an angle.”
Latonia shook her head, sighing. “Seriously, what a mess of a family. Listen, I have to go, but let me fill you in on Cammie’s situation. Take good care of her, okay?”

When Camilla woke up, she needed a moment to figure out where she even was. For a second, she didn’t recognize the room or remember what day it was.
“Cammie, you’re awake?” Catheleen’s voice came from right beside her.
It took Camilla a second to focus. “What are you doing here?”
“Latonia had to run to work. She called me, told me you had a fever. How are you feeling now? Any better? Should I go find the doctor?”
Before Camilla could answer, Catheleen was already bouncing out of the room, quick and light on her feet.
She’s my age, Camilla thought, but she’s still such a kid at heart. Probably because her whole family spoils her.
Thinking about family made Camilla’s chest ache. Her parents had always been hard on her. No matter how hard she tried or what she accomplished, they never seemed to care. There was always some criticism, never any warmth.
And Barbara… Camilla had promised her anything she wanted, offered everything, but Barbara chose tricks instead. She ended up isolating Camilla from her own friends, leaving her with only Daniel. Now, after everything, even Daniel’s real nature was showing through.
Catheleen came back with Galen, just in time to see a tear slip down Camilla’s cheek.
Catheleen checked in on her, making sure she wasn’t hungry or thirsty, fluffing her pillow, and then, like it was no big deal, asked about the divorce.
While they were talking, Camilla’s phone rang. She checked the name. It was Jackson.
He was an elder in the family. No matter what, Camilla knew she had to pick up.
“Camilla, what’s going on between you and Daniel? Why am I hearing you’re both involved with the police now?” Jackson’s voice sounded tired and annoyed.
He’d never been happy about Daniel marrying Camilla, but eventually gave in, hoping they’d settle down and live quietly. Now things had gone so far that the police were involved.
Camilla knew the divorce wouldn’t go anywhere without the parents. Daniel still acted more like a kid than an adult. He was nowhere near capable of handling this by himself.
So, this time, she didn’t hold back. She told Jackson everything Daniel had done, from start to finish, leaving out nothing—not even the disaster that happened on the yacht.
