Jackson’s voice went hard. “Camilla, that isn’t something you joke about.”
“Daniel did something like that? Camilla, this isn’t something you joke about.”
Camilla didn’t back down. “Ask Daniel yourself.”
Jackson hung up, his eyes sharp as he turned to where Daniel was standing nearby.
“Talk. What happened?”
Daniel was still out on bail. Camilla was dead set on pressing charges and divorcing him, and he was completely out of ideas.
He said, “Dad, the other guy was Owen. You know what Owen’s like. He’s got his sights set on Camilla, and I couldn’t do anything.”
Jackson just stared, shocked at how low his son had stooped. He grabbed the first thing on the table and hurled it at Daniel.
“You idiot!”
Daniel had never been hit in his life. The ashtray caught him at the edge of his forehead, and blood started trickling down instantly.
“Are you even using your head? No matter how much of a jerk Owen is, you’re a White! You’ve got Lambert above you.”
“Even if Owen had the nerve, he wouldn’t dare mess with a White in-law under Lambert’s name. He’d have to think twice. Do you really not get that? How did I end up with a son who can’t figure out something so basic?”
Daniel looked miserable. “Dad, maybe you’re putting too much faith in how much Lambert cares about us. If you think about it, his relationship with the Gateses is way closer.”
Jackson looked like he was ready to throw something else. “Even if Lambert is tight with the Gateses, this kind of scandal would still hit his reputation. Owen would know that. But you—you just handed your wife over, like it was nothing. Camilla is your wife. How could you even consider doing that? Are you a man or not?”
Daniel pressed his hand to his bleeding head, more infuriated and in pain. “It already happened. What else could I do? I never stood a chance against Owen anyway! Sure, maybe he’s wary of Lambert, but if he ever wanted to come after our family later, he totally could.”
“That doesn’t matter. You never, ever use your wife like that. Our family doesn't sink that low.”
“I know, Dad. I know I screwed up,” Daniel begged, looking desperate. “Now what do I do? She’s determined to divorce me…”
“After what you pulled, of course she wants a divorce!”
Jackson kept letting his anger out, getting the rest of the story in bits and pieces.
“You’re being played. Can’t you see it? She’s making a fool out of you!”
“And that Barbara girl? She doesn’t even like you. She’s just stringing you along and you keep falling for it.”
“If you had half a brain, things wouldn’t have gotten this far.”
At the mention of Barbara, Daniel couldn’t hold it in. “Dad, it’s not what you think. Barbie has nothing to do with this…”
“Shut up.”
Jackson stomped up and down the room, hands on his hips, coming to a decision.
“Get the divorce. Let Camilla go. Stop ruining her life.”
