He refused to go in and sign the papers. No matter how hard you tried to drag him inside, it wouldn’t change anything.
Plus, there was that one-month cooling-off period. As long as he kept saying no, the divorce just wasn’t going to happen.
Latonia gave Camilla a small shake of her head. That was it for today—there was no chance.
Camilla had walked in with all these hopeful dreams about a fresh start, a new life. But this man… he somehow managed to set a new low every time she thought he couldn’t go lower. Her chest felt heavy and bruised, packed with hurt she couldn’t shake.
It hurt so much.
Latonia gently took her arm, and together they turned to leave.
Daniel watched them go, knowing that whatever stunt he pulled today, it wouldn’t magically fix things or make Camilla forgive him. He stood up and called after them, desperate. “Camilla, I’m not giving up! Just watch, I’ll prove it to you! I’ll love you the right way. You’ll see!”
Latonia didn’t even look back. “Ignore him. Let’s just go home.”
Camilla quietly agreed.
Inside the car, Latonia started the engine. “If he refuses to get divorced, then we’ll have to take it to court.”
Camilla looked at her uncertainly. “Will that actually work? Will the court grant a divorce?”
Latonia nodded, but it wasn’t a confident one. “Usually, the first time you file, the court just tries to get both sides to talk things out. Most first-time filings, they don’t approve the divorce. Usually people have to file twice, sometimes even more. And it takes a long time. But your situation is different. Daniel’s done a lot of awful things. If we hand in the evidence and they believe it’s true, the judge should let you go pretty quickly.”
Camilla locked onto what mattered most. “How do I prove what happened? Especially what happened on the yacht… I don’t have any evidence.”
“That’s the big issue,” Latonia admitted. “The police do have a record from the time he forced you, and when things got physical. That helps, but if he plays remorseful, it can muddy the picture—judges care about evidence. If we could prove what happened on the yacht—if we could show it was really him—it would make things so much easier.”
Camilla frowned. “But how do I prove that? I didn’t… at the time I couldn’t…”
She answered, voice calm. “Did you go to the Register Office? How did it go?”
With Camilla sitting right there, Latonia replied, “We’re actually still in the parking lot. Daniel changed his mind at the last second.”
Hearing “divorce,” Camilla froze and looked over.
Camilla’s stomach dropped—she’d recognized Latonia’s tone. That wasn’t Catheleen. Before she could ask, Latonia handed her the phone. “I need to drive. Talk to him.”
Camilla took a shaky breath and brought the phone to her ear. “Catheleen?”
A deep, warm voice answered. “It’s me.”
Camilla felt completely caught off guard. “Mr. White?”
