Draven now…”

She had just started to say it when the call unexpectedly connected. She must have accidentally hit the call button.

Ayla instantly gave Halle a “shush” gesture. Halle realizing the call had already gone through, just sighed and settled in to see what Ayla would do next.

“Is there something you need?” Draven’s deep voice came through the receiver.

Ayla said, “Mr. Storm, if a guy’s girlfriend gets picked on, he’d definitely stand up for her, right?”

Draven was in the middle of a business dinner, but the moment he picked up, he was already heading out of the room. Once outside, he said, Of course. Maybe our relationship isn’t real, but I still have to act like a real boyfriend, or my mom will never buy it.”

His girlfriend being bullied was just out of the question.

Draven didn’t interrupt. Once she finished, he just said, “I’ll take care of it,” and hung up.

Ayla hung up, looking satisfied.

“Why would he help you?” Halle was totally baffled. Then she looked even more shocked. “Wait, don’t tell me he’s your boyfriend!”

“Yep.” Ayla nodded seriously.

Halle reached over and patted Ayla’s head, her expression worried. “No way. Girl, have you finally lost your mind?” She looked so concerned “Be normal, please, or you’ll scare me.”

Ayla replied, “You really don’t believe me?”

“I believe you about everything else, but you dating Draven? No way. I asked you about it before, and you said there was zero chance. Plus after seeing him at dinner with us yesterday, I can tell he’s just not relationship material. He’s way too cold… You couldn’t have gotten together overnight. It doesn’t make sense.”

Halle’s logic was sound. Ayla had thought the same thing. But just as she finished, her phone

rang.

It was Conrad.

Halle glanced at Ayla, then at the phone, then finally answered. “Mr. Alvarado…”

“Ms. Kinsman, I owe you an apology. Can you meet me now?”

Halle stared at Ayla, then checked the caller ID to make sure it was actually Conrad, and put to her ear again.

Conrad said a bunch of polite things. The richest man in Trensea wanted to apologize to her in person, and Halle was floored.

She was confused, but she couldn’t say no to that. She agreed and hung up.

Ayla was about to say something when Halle lunged at her, grabbing her face with mock fury. “Ayla, unless you tell me everything right now, I swear I will do it!”

Ayla didn’t even flinch. She kissed Halle on the cheek, leaving her stunned and speechless.

“Draven asked me to pretend to be his girlfriend to fool his mom. Other than us not actually being together, everything else is real. Still, if his girlfriend’ gets bullied and he doesn’t do anything, his mom will see right through it. That’s why we had to deal with what happened today.”
