Draven was Troy’s older brother. The two were always at each other’s throats, but even so, Troy didn’t have the means to completely cut ties with Draven. That was even less possible for Rolf and the Alvarados, especially with someone as powerful as Dustin in the picture now.
If Rolf had managed to slip out a moment earlier, he might have been fine.
But now, he was trapped.
Once Dustin took his seat, everyone else followed suit.
Conrad was there to play host, so he started steering the conversation toward current events, carefully avoiding any mention of Rolf. Halle figured her past issues with Rolf weren’t worth bringing up anymore, so she kept quiet.
the “How is the NovaTech Park in Halvara coming along…” Conrad started to bring up project, but before he could go on, Ayla picked up her soup spoon and tapped her wine glass.
The sharp, crisp clinking sound cut through the private room and drew everyone’s attention.
Conrad stared at her, clearly taken aback. “Ms. Keaton…”
Ayla cut him off. “Mr. Alvarado, why don’t we settle the main issue first?”
She looked straight at Rolf, her eyes cold and piercing.
Conrad’s face froze, disbelief in his eyes. He’d been to plenty of dinners like this, but situations like this were rare.
Sure, Ayla was Draven’s secretary, but that didn’t mean she could just take over and stir things up in front of everyone.
Rolf had crossed the line with Halle today and owed her an apology, but even Draven hadn’t said much. For Ayla to jump in now, Conrad could only see her as stirring up trouble.
“Ms. Keaton, with Mr. Porter and Mr. Storm both here, why not just eat first…” Conrad tried to defuse things.
Ayla lifted her gaze, her voice relaxed but her attitude unyielding. “If I remember right, Mr. Alvarado, tonight’s gathering is for Mr. Kinsman to apologize to Ms. Kinsman. I respect Mr. Porter, but things need to be settled in order-there’s no point in leaving old debts unsettled.”
Conrad’s face went rigid.
Lisa wasn’t all that surprised. Halle’s complaints were just talk; she never took them to heart.

Ayla, though, had hit right at the heart of the matter. With her sharp looks and intelligence, Lisa figured someone like her wouldn’t take a risk unless she was sure of herself.
Maybe Halle was only getting this much support because Ayla was on her side.
Lisa glanced at Rolf, seeing the anger in his stiff expression. If it weren’t for the presence of Draven and Dustin, he probably would have blown up by now-maybe even his father wouldn’t be able to rein him in.
Lisa had no interest in embarrassing herself along with Rolf anymore. She just wanted to sit back and watch.
Conrad wanted to say something, but Rolf grabbed his hand.
Conrad shook him off and looked at Ayla-a woman with a cold, sharp presence. He realized he’d underestimated her, but instead of answering right away, he turned to Draven. “Mr. Storm, Rolf really was out of line today…”
Draven tapped his glass lightly, giving a single indifferent glance that somehow radiated pressure. “Then teach him a lesson now.”
Conrad’s fake smile froze. He stalled for several seconds before he could recover.
Now he understood everything.
Before Draven arrived, Rolf’s glass had only been a small one. Now, Conrad swapped it for a large wine glass, filled it to the brim, and pushed it over to Rolf.
“Apologize to Ms. Kinsman.” Conrad’s words were brief but utterly serious.
If this were just any other dinner, Rolf could have stormed out. But with Draven there-and Dustin from the securities commission-neither of them were people the Alvarados could afford to offend. If he acted out, his dad would have to spend ages cleaning up after him. So, as much as he hated it, he didn’t dare throw a fit
Rolf hadn’t felt so humiliated in ages-he was fuming.
Jaw clenched, Rolf stood up and picked up the full glass. “Ms. Kinsman, I was out of line tonight. My words were out of place. I sincerely apologize to you.”
He was about to down the wine when Ayla’s cool voice cut in. “Hold on.”
Rolf nearly blurted out, “What the hell are you getting involved for?” But he kept his mouth shut and just glared at her coldly.
“I said earlier, you owe Ms. Kinsman an apology but you owe me one, too. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten that?”

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
