Chapter 285 Testing the Line
Chapter 285 Testing the Line
Skyla suddenly wanted to test Juliet’s stance.
She wanted to see whether Juliet stood with her or sided with her niece instead.
Skyla stepped forward and knocked on the door.
After a moment, Juliet opened it.
Skyla tried to go inside.
But Juliet said, “Skyla, go wait in the car. I’ll be right there.”
“Since we’re already here, let me go see Grandma…”
Given Juliet’s attitude over the years, it was obvious she leaned toward the Summers.
Juliet still refused: “She’s already fallen asleep. Go wait in the car.”
Skyla hesitated, then said, “Alright. I’ll wait.”

Lillian had dementia, and Skyla would never be caught dead visiting her. But she had the answer to her question.
At least in this matter, Juliet sided with Ayla.
This was the Walkers’ matter and had nothing to do with the Summers, Juliet’s decision wasn’t unreasonable.
Still, Skyla felt uncomfortable.
Deep down, she didn’t want Juliet to still care about that utterly disgraceful niece.
But whether she liked it or not, Juliet still held Ayla in her heart.
Skyla’s gaze cooled.
Ayla is such a pain.
Ayla had no intention of telling Kaleb about the small clash with Juliet. Given his personality, he’d definitely explode, and she’d have to spend effort calming him down.
As long as it was handled, that was enough.
Kaleb had taken a cab over earlier. Now, he was in her car, sitting in the driver’s seat.
Ayla walked around the front and got into the passenger seat. When she looked back, something seemed off about his mood.

Kaleb’s personality and presence were cold and sharp. He was unruly, usually relaxed and loose, with a tough, untouchable edge.
That kind of vibe wasn’t especially likable.
But right now, Kaleb clearly looked troubled, and for once, it made him easier on the eyes.
“If you’re not gonna talk to me, don’t put on that face. It just makes me worry.”
“Worry?” Kaleb shot her an annoyed look. “Do you wanna ditch me as your brother already? Now, you’re not even pretending.”
“How do you know I wanted a sister back then?”
“Hey-”
“Talk properly, or get out of the car.” Ayla already had a system for dealing with Kaleb.
Whatever he said, she’d ignore it, and things would be fine.
The key was never to follow his logic.
Kaleb was the type who liked to argue with her on purpose. “If I wanted out, would I be in the driver’s seat? I’m driving to your place. Tell Meryll to make dinner early.”
Kaleb hadn’t planned on going to Ayla’s place.
But what Bria said earlier had stuck with him.
That nasty, arrogant way Bria treated them showed him exactly how bad Ayla’s days had been with the Winstons.
Before, Kaleb had avoided Ayla on his own, caring too little to notice any of it.
If he’d known earlier, he would’ve dragged Ayla out of the Winstons by force.
Even if she caused a scene, he would’ve tied her up at home and refused to let her go.
Now, Kaleb was full of regret and guilt.
He hated himself for not growing up sooner.
If he’d shown more concern, Ayla wouldn’t have suffered so much. At the very least, she wouldn’t have wasted three years being stupid.
And after the divorce, she still had to clean up his mess.
Damn it. Bria had one thing right.

The more Kaleb thought about it, the worse he felt. It felt like an arrow had gone straight through his heart. Once you truly cared about someone, you genuinely couldn’t bear to see them hurt.
It hurt too much, and you wouldn’t let it happen.
Ayla was his only sister.
To put it bluntly, if life ever got hard, the only person he could rely on would be Ayla.

Why is half of each of these chapters missing? The story sort of trails off in the middle of the chapter. That’s unfortunate....
