How could Sebastian have peace and safety without Riley? Who would he grow old with now?
He’d always prided himself on being 10 steps ahead of everyone
else. But no matter how carefully he planned, some things couldn’t be controlled.
And there were mistakes in this world that could never be
undone.
“Sebastian, you’re my son. You’ll end up just like me, unable to have the one you love, suffering forever.” Gregory’s voice echoed
in his mind.
“No, I won’t. I’m not you. I won’t end up like you…” Sebastian whispered, pressing the card against his chest.
It was as close as he could get to holding the woman he loved.
Lara definitely wasn’t expecting Riley to show up at her door late at night with a suitcase.
“Can I crash here for a few days? I’ll look for my own place this week,” Riley said.
“You can stay as long as you want. But finding a place? What’s going on? Aren’t you living with Sebastian anymore?” Lara asked, confused.

“What happened? Did you guys have a fight?” Lara asked casually. She couldn’t even picture Riley and Sebastian arguing. It seemed impossible.
“We broke up,” Riley said quietly
Before coming to Lara’s place, Riley had driven to the riverbank and sat there until dark, trying to calm herself down. Only then did she drive over here.
Lara’s jaw dropped. “You broke up? You and Sebastian actually broke up?”
God! She’d been shocked enough when Riley started dating Sebastian in the first place. She’d finally gotten used to the idea, and now they were breaking up?
“Who ended it?” Lara asked.
“I did,” Riley said.
“And Sebastian just agreed to it?” Lara practically shouted. Even as an outsider, she could see how crazy Sebastian was about Riley.
“I don’t need his permission. If one person wants out, it’s over.”
“I mean, yeah, but…” Lara’s voice trailed off. “Wait, why did you break up with him? Weren’t you just buying him birthday presents?”
They’d seemed so happy together. How did they go from that

“We wanted different things, so it didn’t work out,” Riley said.

years.
Riley was speaking calmly, but Lara had known her for She could tell Riley was nowhere near as composed as she was pretending to be.
“Alright, you can have your old room back,” Lara said.
“I haven’t really touched anything since you left, so it works out perfectly. You can get it sorted yourself. As for finding your own place, wait until after you get back from looking for your brother. Then you can find something that works for you.”
“Sounds good.” Riley didn’t argue. “I’ll pay you rent.”
“Come on, you’re like my company’s golden goose now. You make me tons of money, so the rent’s nothing. Think of it as employee housing, boss‘ treat,” Lara said with a grin.
“Thanks.” Riley didn’t push it further and carried her bags into
the room.

The next day, Riley went to the military base and submitted the video of Samuel from five years ago to the army officials.
She hoped they could help search for Samuel in Germany while she went there herself to see what she could find.

Riley was just leaving the military base when her phone rang.
It was Felix, Sebastian’s private secretary.
“Ms. Anderson, could you please come see Mr. Torres? He broke his fingers, but he’s refusing medical treatment. I can’t talk any sense into him,” Felix said quickly.
Riley stayed quiet.
Felix’s voice grew more urgent. “Ms. Anderson, if Mr. Torres doesn’t get to a hospital soon, those fingers might never heal properly. He could end up with permanent damage, maybe even lose the use of his hand completely.”
After a long moment, Riley finally spoke, “Where is he?”
“He’s still at the apartment you two shared,” Felix said.
Riley didn’t say anything else. She just hung up.
