Chapter 312 I’ll Wait
That was how everything that came after happened.
Josephine went to the hospital to see Zane, and after that, he was recognized as the Lincoln family’s illegitimate son. He took Lina with him when he went to Germany.
But a year ago, Lina was diagnosed with blood cancer. They couldn’t find a matching bone marrow donor, and her condition kept getting worse.
“Right now, the Lincolns are covering all of Lina’s treatment,” Sebastian said. “They’re using the best treatment plans and medications in the world, plus a top medical team.” He paused. “The Lincolns are willing to give Lina this kind of care because Zane is ‘currently‘ part of their family.”
It suddenly clicked for Riley.
So that was why Zane wouldn’t do a DNA test with her, why he kept saying it wasn’t necessary.
If the DNA proved he really was her Samuel and not a Lincoln, then the Lincolns would cut off Lina’s treatment.
But if he really was Samuel, they could just go back home and the government would help treat Lina. They’d do it for the person who saved Samuel’s life.

Plus, Riley could help too. She had savings, patent money, and the inheritance her parents left her. All of that could go toward Lina’s treatment.
Riley said, “Anyway, in two days, we’ll know if Zane’s really my brother or not.”
“If he is… will you hate me even more for leaving him to die back then?” Sebastian asked out of nowhere.
Riley froze.
“Will you think that if I hadn’t left him to die, your brother wouldn’t have been in that fire three years ago? That he wouldn’t have gotten burned? Will you blame me more because my actions made him suffer so much?” Sebastian’s voice was quiet.
Riley let out a long breath. “No. I won’t blame you.”
Sebastian looked genuinely surprised. “Really?”
Riley nodded. “I told you before. To you back then, my brother was just some random stranger you met in a foreign country. You didn’t have any obligation to save him.
“Yeah, I was angry about it before. I hated you for it. Even though I knew you didn’t owe him anything, I couldn’t stop

feeling that way. But not anymore. You’ve helped me a lot since then, and I’ve seen that. I remember it. So I’m grateful to you.”
“Then if Zane really is your brother… can we get back together?” Sebastian stared at her intensely.
Riley shook her head. “The real reason I broke up with you is that I can’t fully trust you anymore. Don’t you get that?”
“Then what would it take for you to trust me again? If destroying trust only takes a second, then how long does rebuilding it take? One year? Two years? Five years? Just tell me how many years it’ll take for you to trust me again.” Sebastian’s voice turned bitter.
“As long as you can trust me again, I’ll do whatever you want.”
Riley didn’t say anything.
Sebastian suddenly grabbed Riley’s hand and pressed her palm against his cheek. “I know you still have feelings for me. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have let me hold your hand to help me sleep after you found out about my insomnia. You still care about me, right?”
Riley felt the heat from his face burning into her palm, and his eyes–usually so cold and distant–were now filled with unshed
tears.

Sebastian continued, “Riley, please forgive me. I’ll do everything I can to make up for what Samuel endured. From now on, I won’t lie to you or hide things from you ever again. The trust you want? I’ll give you all of it.”
His hoarse voice hit every nerve in her body.
He was right. She did still care about him.
Even though she kept telling herself not to care, that she needed to let go of these feelings, that she didn’t want to turn into someone paranoid and suspicious because of this relationship.
But… seeing the tears in his eyes, the words of rejection got stuck in her throat.
“Riley, when you left, you took all your things with you, but you left that cuff behind. The card you left said you hoped I’d be safe and sound every year. But without you, do you really think I can be safe and sound?”
As he finished speaking, the tears in his eyes finally fell and landed on her hand.
At that moment, Riley felt like those tears were scalding hot.
Her brain was screaming at her to pull her hand away, to say the rejection more firmly this time. 4/5

But what actually came out of her mouth was, “Sebastian, I don’t know if trust that’s been destroyed can ever be rebuilt.
After all, destroying trust was so easy, but rebuilding it was impossibly hard.
“I’ll wait. I’ll wait until you’re willing to trust me again,” Sebastian said, his voice full of emotion.
At least this time, she hadn’t rejected him outright like before.
That had to mean she still had feelings for him.
“What if that day never comes?” Riley asked.
“Then I’ll keep waiting. I’ll wait until I’m old. I’ll wait until I die,” he said.
Riley looked down. Those words felt so heavy, like a boulder pressing down on her chest.
Waiting until old age, waiting until death–how many people in this world could actually keep a promise like that?
Had Sebastian’s feelings for her really grown so deep in just a
few months?
