Chapter 105 Everything Except Companionship

“But I don’t think I’m sick-just mentally tormented,” Wendy said softly. Her voice sounded fragile and delicate. “Ever since this happened, I’ve been sad every day. I’ve also been worried about whether you’ve sorted out the company’s issues.”
Wendy wasn’t actually unwell. But she wanted to pester Peyton. Her only goal was to get him on the phone.
He didn’t mind taking her calls. They could talk about anything during the day. But she always chose this late hour to bother him, and it annoyed him deeply.
“Wendy, go to bed early,” he said calmly. “Put down your phone, stop overthinking, and relax.”
Peyton had been extremely patient with her. He’d endured her antics without showing any irritation. He just didn’t want her to get the wrong idea.
“Peyton, I really can’t sleep,” she pleaded. “I know I shouldn’t bother you at this hour, but I have no other choice. I can’t find anyone else to talk to. Can you just stay on the line with me? You don’t even have to speak. Just keep the call going quietly.”
Wendy felt she never asked for much.
My requests are always small. But he never seems to acknowledge them, let alone fulfill them.
“Wendy, you know how swamped I am with company work right now,” Peyton sighed. “It’s already this late. Why aren’t you asleep?”
He thought the therapist he’d hired for her would have helped. But she seemed to be acting more recklessly than ever.
She’d been acting distracted lately, doing strange things with no clear purpose.
Wendy believed he owed her more attention-constant companionship and indulgence of her unreasonable demands.
“I’m sorry, Peyton. Did I make you angry again?” she whispered. “I really have no sleep at all tonight. I didn’t know who else to call, so I bothered you.”
“Peyton, I don’t need these big houses or a lavish lifestyle,” she continued earnestly. “I just want someone to be with me. These past few years have been so lonely. I’m stuck at home all day, unable to go out easily. And when I do, I feel like everyone’s looking at me strangely.”
She sounded like she was pouring out her heart, complaining about her hardships and making her needs clear.
Peyton rubbed his temples in frustration. He stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking. “Wendy, I never wanted what happened before to occur. But it did, and it left you with such serious consequences. I’ve felt deep guilt toward you all these years.
“To be honest, I’ve been trying to make it up to you. I want to give you a good life. Even if you never marry, I’ll support you financially. But I can’t fulfill your emotional needs.”
Peyton knew he had to be clear with her. This cycle couldn’t go on. She’d only grow more demanding.

“Peyton, what happened back then was my choice. It had nothing to do with you, Wendy insisted. “I never asked you to take responsibility. I just want you to spend time with me sometimes.
“I’ve been stuck at home alone every day. I’m really bored. When I try to go out and hang out with people. I find they’ve drifted away from me. I don’t know why, but I never blamed you. It was my choice back then!
“Peyton, all I need is a little of your time. Besides you, it feels like the whole world has abandoned me.”
Wendy spoke with deep grievance, her tone firm. She was sharing her true feelings. In reality, she lived a carefree life. She was just too idle most of the time.
Peyton let out a long sigh. “Wendy, you know how busy I am with work. If I had time, I’d definitely come see you. But now isn’t the right moment.
“I’ve said everything I need to say. I hope you can find something to occupy your days. If there’s anything you enjoy doing, tell me, I’ll do my best to make it happen.”
He could give her everything except companionship. They were just friends, and spending too much time together would only complicate things.
“Alright, Wendy. It’s getting late. Go to bed early. We’ll talk about anything else tomorrow. The specialists I hired for you will come for a consultation tomorrow. I’ll pick you up then.”
