Quinn shook her head helplessly. Still, she couldn’t deny how much they valued her. She felt protected-a feeling she’d never known before, one that brought her quiet reassurance.

When she was with Felix, they’d often had conflicts. But back then, she’d always dealt with her feelings alone, telling herself to be considerate of him, and letting things slide.

Felix had never truly apologized to her. Even when he was wrong, he’d never acknowledge it. Looking back, she thought she’d been foolish, wasting so many years on someone who wasn’t worth it.

“The food’s ready now. Let’s go eat together,” Quinn said.

Deep down, she was happy to see them. After all, the people, who cared about her and the man she loved were all by her side.

The group sat down to a warm, cheerful meal. Once everything was cleared up, no one mentioned the earlier issue again.

Halfway through the meal, the doorbell rang. Mabel hurried to answer it.

She froze for a moment when she opened the door. She’d never expected it to be Wendy.

“Mrs. Iris Reed, Mrs. Reed,” Wendy greeted with a smile. “When I was with Peyton earlier, I heard him on the phone saying you were here. He told me to rest more and didn’t want me to trouble’myself coming over. But I haven’t seen you in so long, so I wanted to stop by and visit.”

Wendy brought a pile of expensive gifts, with a driver following behind her carrying the bags.

“Wendy, come in and sit down,” Iris said, speaking up since no one else had. She’d met Wendy many times before and always treated her kindly.

After all, Wendy had saved her grandson’s life. She had to be polite.

Eleanor, however, looked serious. Her expression darkened immediately. In her eyes, her son had done more than enough for Wendy. Their family had tried their best and never owed her anything. Yet Wendy was never satisfied.

“Mrs. Iris Reed, I’ve already eaten,” Wendy said, putting on a casual, warm demeanor. “I just wanted to see you. I’ve missed you so much since we last met.”

“Wendy, I heard you’ve been doing rehabilitation lately. How’s it going? Do you feel any better?” Iris asked. “I know rehabilitation is a painful process. You must have endured a lot of hardship these days.

“But if you keep going, it will pay off. Your efforts won’t be in vain. So you must stick with it. Don’t give up halfway.”

Iris couldn’t help but comfort her, sincerely hoping she’d be able to walk again.

“Mrs. Iris Reed, there were so many times I wanted to give up,” Wendy said, her voice softening. “It hurts so much. My legs were numb for so long. I got used to it. But now, suddenly having to endure this pain… I can barely stand it.

“But lucky for me, Peyton’s always there with me, encouraging me. No matter what happens, he comes to help me right away. Having him around makes me feel so safe and at ease.”

As she spoke, a sweet smile spread across her face. She deliberately raised her voice, as if she wanted everyone to hear her.

“That’s good,” Iris replied calmly. “You can call him if you need anything. But the company has a lot going on lately. I’ve handed over full responsibility to him. He might be too busy sometimes, so I hope you’ll understand.

“Besides, they’ll be getting engaged soon, which means even more things to take care of. I hope you’ll be considerate. If you need help, you can call me directly. I might not be able to come in person, but I’ll find someone to assist you.”

Iris was clever. She deliberately brought up their engagement at this moment, wanting Wendy to understand that she needed to keep a proper distance from Peyton-after all, he was about to get engaged.

A flash of despair and anger crossed Wendy’s eyes.

So that’s why they’ve come so suddenly. It’s about the engagement!

Her heart turned cold. She had an urge to lash out, but she didn’t dare show it. If she offended them, she’d have no future to look forward to.

“Mrs. Iris Reed, I really don’t want to trouble Peyton,” Wendy said, her voice trembling slightly. “I know he’s so busy with work. But sometimes I can’t help it. I feel so desperate.”
