“Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to,” Eleanor said sharply. “They’re getting engaged soon. If he had even an ounce of feelings for you, he wouldn’t be marrying someone else. I’ve never meddled in my son’s love life. Who he chooses is his freedom.

“If he wanted to marry you. I wouldn’t stand in his way. I know he always picks what’s best for him. But he didn’t choose you. So stop clinging to him. You two have no future together.

You know exactly how much he’s done for you over the years. If you’re smart, you’ll take the money, leave this city, and start a better life. If you want to keep doing rehab, the Reeds will get you into the best facility in any city you pick.”

Eleanor laid it all out plain and clear. This was her final warning to Wendy. If she refused to back off, she d be forced to take harsher measures.

Wendy had never once considered truly leaving. She’d never given up on being with Peyton. She’d cling to any shred of hope she could find.

I’ve loved Peyton for years. Why should I just hand him over to someone else?

Resentment burned hot in her chest.

“Mrs. Reed, I’ve lived in this city for years. I’m rooted here,” Wendy said, her voice trembling. “You know how hard it is for me to get around now. Making me leave would be torture. I don’t want to go.

“There’s nothing going on between Peyton and me, I swear. Please believe me. We’ve never wanted anything more than this brother-sister bond. I know he’s about to start his own family.

“I know you won’t believe me no matter what I say. But I really don’t want to leave. Please don’t force me to

go.”

Wendy’s eyes welled up with tears, her face twisting into a mask of helpless despair.

“I’m not forcing you to leave,” Eleanor sighed. “I’m just asking you to move to another city. It would be good for you. Don’t twist my words. I’ll make sure you’re taken care of no matter where you go.

“If you’re smart and looking out for yourself, you’ll do as I say. I don’t mean you any harm. I just want you to have a better life. You’ll meet new people, start fresh.”

Eleanor had known Wendy wouldn’t agree easily.

“Mrs. Reed, but I’ve spent my whole life here,” Wendy pleaded, putting on her most earnest tone. “You can’t make me leave just because Peyton’s getting engaged. That’s not fair. I promise I won’t bother them. anymore. I’ll never go to him unless I have no other choice.

We can all go our separate ways and leave each other in peace. But making me move to a place where I know no one? I can’t do that.”

She made herself sound utterly pitiful, like everyone was ganging up to drive her out of her home.

“I’m not making you leave because of the engagement,” Eleanor retorted, growing frustrated. “I’m suggesting a change of scenery for your own good. I know you’re in love with Peyton. I know you want to be with him.

“But you’ve seen the truth. He’s found someone he loves, and they’re getting engaged. What’s the point of clinging to him like this? You’ll never have him. You deserve someone better. Leaving this city would give you a chance to heal and move on.”

Eleanor felt a twinge of helplessness.

How havel ended up being the villain pushing her out? The girl’s a master manipulator, that’s for sure.

“I’m not leaving, Wendy said firmly, her voice cold and unyielding.

There was no room for negotiation. She would never leave the city where the man she loved lived. She would never give up so easily.

“Fine. Stay if you want,” Eleanor said, her voice turning icy. “I can’t force you to go if you’re that stubborn. But I’m warning you-stay away from my son.

“He’s about to get engaged. This messy, ambiguous relationship between you two is bad for his reputation. It’s bad for yours too-you’re still a young, unmarried woman.

“I’ve said all I need to say. More words would be a waste of breath. But if I catch you causing trouble again, I won’t hesitate to step in. As his mother, it’s my duty to protect his future wife. I won’t let her suffer any wrongs in this family.”

This was Eleanor’s final warning. She was a woman too-she saw right through Wendy’s little games. And she would never let her get away with it.

“Mrs. Reed, I never meant to—”
