“Spare me the excuses,” Eleanor snapped, cutting her off. “Actions speak louder than words.”
She had no desire to hear another word of Wendy’s explanations.
There’s nothing left to say to this woman. If we kept going, we’d end up screaming at each other. More importantly, Iris is still out there. She will worry sick if she hearsus fighting, and I refuse to upset her.
When Eleanor stepped out of the room, Peyton immediately noticed her dark expression. He didn’t need to ask to know what had transpired between the two women.
“Mrs. Iris Reed, I’ll come visit you again another day,” Wendy said, forcing a weak smile. “It’s getting late. I won’t stay and disturb your rest any longer.”
She felt utterly humiliated, like a fool who’d barged into their happy family gathering uninvited. If it had just been Iris here, none of this would have happened. She’d never expected Eleanor to show up and put her in her place so ruthlessly.
“All right, dear. It is quite late,” Iris replied gently, patting her hand. “Go home and get some rest. Keep up the good work with your rehab!”
Her voice was warm with encouragement, still tinged with that lingering guilt she carried for Wendy.
As soon as Wendy left, Iris turned to Eleanor, her brows furrowed with concern. “What did you two talk about in there? Did you threaten her again? That poor girl-she’s stuck in that wheelchair, unable to even walk on her own.”
“Iris, I know she’s pitiful,” Eleanor sighed, frustration evident in her tone. “But she’s got a heart full of schemes. Our family has bent over backward to make amends for her over the years. We’ve done everything we can to make up for what happened. But there’s a line-she can’t keep taking advantage of our kindness
like this.

“I never would’ve interfered before. Whatever Peyton did for her was his business, his way of repaying his debt. But now? He’s about to get engaged. I have to look out for his relationship with Quinn.
“And don’t think I don’t know who was behind those tabloid rumors last time. She thought she covered her tracks perfectly, but it won’t take much to trace it back to her. That wasn’t just some harmless gossip—it damaged our company’s reputation.
“Peyton and Quinn’s engagement announcement will be out in a few days. You can bet someone will dig up all this old dirt about him and Wendy then. If she truly loved Peyton, how could she do something that would hurt him like that?”
Eleanor laid it all out, her words sharp and logical. This was the plain truth of the matter. Wendy had been exploiting their sympathy all along, wrapping them up in a web of moral blackmail. And now that things had come to this, it was time to put an end to it.
“You make a fair point,” Iris conceded, her shoulders slumping slightly. “But if we just hold on a little longer -what if she really does manage to walk again someday? Then we could finally lay this guilt to rest.”
“All right, that’s enough for tonight,” she said, clapping her hands gently to signal the end of the conversation. “Let’s not dwell on these unhappy things anymore. Off to bed, everyone. We’re not leaving

She turned to Quinn then, her eyes soft with apology. “Quinn, please don’t blame me for what I’ve done today. I truly had no other choice.”
Iris was a sensible woman, one who saw the situation clearly. She’d always told Peyton to give Wendy whatever she needed. But the only thing she felt truly guilty about was Quinn. Quinn didn’t deserve to be dragged into this mess, to be hurt by their attempts to atone for the past.
“I understand,” Quinn replied, offering her a reassuring smile. “I know you were thinking of everyone, trying to do what’s best for everyone involved. I don’t blame you at all-in fact, I support you.”
She turned to Eleanor then, her voice warm with gratitude. “And thank you, Mrs. Reed. Having you stand up for me like this… it means more than I can say. I don’t have to worry about a thing with you looking out for
me.”
She was genuinely touched. No one had ever defended her this fiercely before, no one had ever put her needs first so unhesitatingly.
“It’s the least I can do, dear,” Eleanor said, her voice softening as she squeezed Quinn’s hand. “You’re marrying into this family, and that makes you one of us. I will never let you suffer any wrongs here. This mess has nothing to do with you, yet you’ve been dragged into it all the same.”
She still felt a twinge of guilt toward Quinn, a sincere desire to fix this situation once and for all. But as strong-willed as she was, there was only so much she could do to control another person’s actions.
With that, the tense topic was dropped for the night. Everyone retired to their respective rooms, leaving only Peyton and Quinn alone together.
Peyton walked over to her, his heart heavy with remorse, and pulled her into a tight embrace.
“I know you’ve been wronged today,” he murmured into her hair, his voice thick with emotion. “Everyone kept asking you to be understanding, to cut me some slack. But you shouldn’t have to. None of this is your fault.
“I’ll fix this, Quinn. I promise you. I’ll put an end to all of this soon, You’ll never have to see Wendy again. She’ll never be able to disrupt our lives like this ever again.”
