“Oh, I’m over the moon!” Eleanor exclaimed, her face lighting up. “I never thought my son would get engaged so soon-and to such a wonderful woman! If I didn’t approve of Quinn, I’d never bother with all this hassle. I’d much rather spend my days playing cards and enjoying myself.”
Eleanor spoke her mind without hesitation, and her words came from the heart. She threw herself into the preparations with enthusiasm, truly wanting the best for Peyton and Quinn.
“Thank you, Mrs. Reed. You and Mom have worked so hard,” Quinn said gratefully. The two mothers had done so much for their engagement.
“It’s all worth it,” Doris replied with a smile. “We’re just so happy to see you two together!”
“Alright, didn’t we plan to go out today?” Peyton said, stepping in to hurry them along. “Everyone hurry and get ready. We’ll head out soon.”
As soon as he finished speaking, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen-it was another call from the hospital.
O
Peyton had no choice but to answer. A frantic voice came through the line the moment he picked up.
“Mr. Reed, your friend is acting out again-worse than last time,” the staff member said urgently. “She refuses to cooperate with treatment at all. If you have time, could you please come over?”
He’d been accompanying Wendy to the hospital every day lately. But today, he’d planned to spend time with his family, so he hadn’t gone. He never expected things to go wrong again.
“Tell her to call me back,” Peyton said firmly. “I’ll talk to her and straighten this out.”
He’d promised his family he’d go out with them today. If he bailed now, not only would Quinn be disappointed, but the whole family would be let down. He didn’t want to leave.
Yet he couldn’t just abandon Wendy either. They’d already stuck with the treatment for several days-one more push might make all the difference, easing her pain in the long run.
“We’ve already tried telling her to call you,” the staff member replied, frustration evident in their voice. “But she refuses. She won’t cooperate with treatment, and we’re at our wit’s end. That’s why we had to call you.
“She’s locked herself in a room and won’t come out. We really don’t know what to do.”
The staff member sounded helpless and desperate. Dealing with a patient like Wendy was exhausting. She refused treatment and always spoke to them rudely.
“Alright, I understand,” Peyton said. He hung up and immediately reached for his phone, ready to call Wendy. He needed to find out what she was up to this time.
“I’ll go out with them,” Quinn said softly, stopping him. “You go handle this first. After all, if you don’t show up, she probably won’t even answer your call.”
Quinn had seen through Wendy’s games long ago-she just hadn’t wanted to point them out. Wendy clearly only wanted Peyton to be there in person; otherwise, she’d refuse treatment.

“Peyton, what the hell is wrong with Wendy?” Eleanor snapped, her patience finally wearing thin. “What does she want? I told her yesterday I’d give her money to stay out of our lives. Why won’t she stop clinging to you? Fix this before your engagement-now!”
ܐ܂
Eleanor had had enough. Wendy was pushing her luck, and it infuriated her.
She’d endured Wendy’s antics for Peyton’s sake, but now-right before his engagement-Wendy kept causing trouble, deliberately trying to stir up drama. Eleanor had no tolerance left for it.
“Mom, I want to give it one more try,” Peyton said calmly. “If she can really walk again, I’ll never have to deal with this again. We need to resolve this properly first.”
Peyton remained level-headed, but he couldn’t shake the guilt weighing on his conscience-that was his biggest hang-up.
“I don’t care how you fix it, but it can’t keep disrupting your lives!” Eleanor argued. “Do you really plan to let this woman keep clinging to you forever? As a woman, I see right through her. She just wants to tie you to her and ruin your relationship with Quinn.
“My patience has run out. I’m not going to put up with this anymore. If she keeps bothering you, I’ll go talk to her myself. I want to see what she thinks she’s doing. Does she really believe this will tear you two apart?”
Eleanor was furious, her pent-up anger finally exploding.
