Harold suddenly spoke up, his words harsh and cruel. He’d come fully prepared, knowing Iris wouldn’t give in casily.
“This is my decision. I won’t come to you if things go wrong.” Iris said solemnly. “I’m doing this because I trust them. Stay out of it!”
She felt even more disappointed in their behavior. They only cared about their own interests, never once thinking about her.
“Harold, I raised you and your brother alone,” she continued. “Look at what you’ve become. As a mother, I sometimes wonder if I failed to raise you right.
“One son lives abroad with his new family and never visits me. The other-you-have turned out like this. You’re here, but do you ever truly respect me? Is money the only thing that matters to you?
“Even if it is, I’ve never treated you badly over the years. So why are you doing this?”
Iris tried to reason with them calmly. She’d said these words countless times before, but they’d never paid any attention.
She’d said all she could. If they refused to listen, they could leave for good. She no longer cared.
“Mom, how could you say that?” Harold protested, making excuses. “How do you know I don’t care about you? It’s because you’ve always favored Peyton. You’ve poured all your attention on him. How have you treated me and my family all these years?
“But you’re my mother. I’ve never truly blamed you. And how could I not care about you? You’re my mom!
“If I hadn’t been disappointed, I would have visited more often…”
Even after going this far, Harold still tried to justify his actions.
Iris had heard enough. She didn’t want to argue anymore.
“My decision is final. No one can change it,” she said firmly.
“I’m not feeling well. You all should leave now. Peyton will always have a place in this family. If you can’t accept him, then you don’t have to accept me. We’ll go our separate ways.”
With that, Iris closed her eyes, refusing to look at Harol any longer.
She felt like a failure as a mother.
Why have both my sons turned out this way?
She’d wondered countless times-would they be different if they still lived in poverty? The thought pained her deeply.
“Iris, we can’t leave like this! We can’t let an outsider take over our family!” Donna exclaimed, growing desperate. “Why should he get everything? He’s not even a Reed! Are you getting senile?”
Her words grew more and more offensive. If Iris refused to hand over the company, she planned to make a scene-refusing to leave no matter what.

“Donna, watch how you talk to Mom!” Harold snapped. He was often timid, but he still cared about Iris’ health.
Donna scoffed, “What’s wrong with what I said? Am I lying? Why should we give all our family’s wealth to an outsider-someone who betrayed us?
“Everything I’m doing is for the good of this family. One day, you’ll thank me!”
Donna spoke with arrogant confidence. She wasn’t leaving until she got what she wanted. Iris’ decision had left her furious.
She’d planned ahead. If Iris refused to surrender the company, she’d go to the board of directors and see who they supported.
