He’d managed every single project and operation in this company. Just because he wasn’t a Reed anymore, did that mean everyone would turn their backs on him? It seemed like it.

His position had always been coveted. If he hadn’t inherited it from Iris, plenty of people would have snatched it up long ago. Even if Harold didn’t take over, someone else would have come gunning for it.

“Tell all executives to meet in the conference room in thirty minutes,” Peyton ordered.

The company was in total chaos. He had to fix this-and fast. A meeting was long overdue.

“Yes, Mr. Reed,” his secretary replied.

Thirty minutes later.

Inside the conference room.

By the time Peyton arrived, all the top executives were already seated. They’d shown up extra eager today, whispering nonstop about his family drama.

“Meeting starts now,” Peyton announced.

He walked in and took the seat at the head of the table. The room went dead silent in an instant. Every eye turned to him.

“I’m sure you’ve all heard about what’s going on with the Reed family,” he said, cutting to the chase. “I have nothing to hide-it’s all true.

“I’m here today on Grandma’s orders. She made it clear that no matter what happens, this company stays in my hands. Our bond after all these years can’t be broken. We’re family, plain and simple.

“But none of that is your concern. The only thing that matters is running this company well.”

Peyton kept his explanation brief. This was family business-no need to overshare with them.

But everyone looked at him with strange, complicated expressions. It was like they’d all gotten together and planned something behind his back.

“Mr. Reed, it’s not that we don’t trust you,” one director spoke up, hesitating. “But the company’s future direction and core strategies are your responsibility. Now that you’re no longer a Reed, how can we be sure you’ll still have the company’s best interests at heart?”

“We have nothing personal against you,” another added. But you know the trouble you’ve brought lately. From your engagement to this latest scandal, your personal issues have hurt the company badly. I’ve done a rough calculation. The losses are massive.

“It’s not just us dealing with the fallout. Some of our parmers are furious with you!”

“Mr. Reed, this is a family business,” a third director chimed in. “Since you’re no longer part of the Reed family, it’s time we reconsider who should be CEO.”

The directors talked over each other, firing one question after another. Peyton could tell they’d planned this attack. They were all hung up on his identity.

Peyton thought.

Have they colluded with Harold?

Otherwise, as mere directors, why would they care so much about this?

“The fact that I’m standing here proves Grandma trusts me,” Peyton said calmly. “Without her support, I wouldn’t be here today.

“My identity is a private family matter. It doesn’t concern any of you. I’ve got the company’s next steps fully planned out. If any of you have objections, you can come talk to me directly.

“I admit my personal issues have caused losses. But I promise you-those losses are temporary. I will make up for them. And I have an overseas partnership project in the works. I wonder if any of you are interested.”

Peyton could afford to be confident. He had an ace up his sleeve, and he knew this project would grab everyone’s attention.
