“I had to reorganize the data for a company patent. I lost track of time while I was working-didn’t realize it was this late,” Quinn said.
“How about you? Did you get everything sorted out at the company?” she asked, her voice laced with
concern.
Peyton seemed fine on the surface, but she could see the exhaustion lingering in his eyes.
“Mostly taken care of. Don’t worry about me,” he replied “From now on, if I’m this late again, go to bed first. No need to wait up for me.”
He felt a twinge of guilt. He knew she’d stayed awake jus to wait for him to come home.
“It’s okay. You always put on a brave face and never share your troubles-I see right through you,” Quinn said softly.
“They already had issues with you because of the losses from before. Now that you’re not a Reed anymore, they’ll definitely keep looking for ways to make trouble for you.
“But your grandma wants you to stay at the company-that’s all that matters. They have no right to kick you out. Still, they won’t let this go easily. You need to be extra careful with everything you do from now on.”
Quinn couldn’t help but urge him. She was truly worried. If things kept going like this, he’d be worn out every single day.
Some problems weren’t solved just by working hard. She made a mental note to spend more time with him, to help lift his spirits a little.
“Alright, it’s getting late. Let’s both get some rest,” she said.
Now that he was home, she could finally relax and sleep soundly.
The next day.
As usual, Quinn arrived at her office. She spotted her assistant, Mia, waiting right at the door.
“Mia, I told you the company doesn’t have much going on these days-you could’ve come in later. Why are you here so early?” Quinn asked, sounding concerned.
Their current projects were running smoothly, and she wanted her hardworking assistant to get some extra rest. Mia was always so dedicated, never complaining about the long hours.
“Miss Hart, I didn’t have anything to do at home anyway” Mia said. “I figured I’d come in early so we could tackle any issues together. Also… there’s something important I wanted to ask you about.
“I checked the calendar-today’s Mr. Harrison’s birthday I want to get him a gift, but I have no idea what to pick. He probably doesn’t need anything, right? I just want to show my appreciation. But I’m too nervous to give it to him directly, and I doubt he’d even care about whatever I get him.”
Mia had been agonizing over this for days, completely suck on what to do.
“I never would’ve remembered if you hadn’t mentioned it-you’re so thoughtful,” Quinn said. “Honestly, I’ve known him for years and never gotten him a gift either. I have no clue what he likes. How about we take him out for dinner tonight?”

If Mia went alone, it would be awkward. Quinn going along with her would make the whole thing feel more natural, less forced.
“That would be amazing, Miss Hart! If you have time tonight, that is,” Mia replied, her face lighting up.
That was exactly what she’d hoped for, but she’d been too shy to ask Quinn directly.
Quinn picked up her phone and dialed Leo’s number right away.
“Happy birthday, Mr. Harrison! If Mia hadn’t seen it on the client’s file and reminded me, I would’ve totally missed it,” Quinn said, her tone playful.
Leo was caught off guard for a second. He never celebrated his birthday, so he’d completely forgotten about it himself.
“You had to remind me–I didn’t even notice,” he laughed. “Let me guess, Miss Hart. You calling me means you’ve got some fancy gift for me?”
He played along with her joke, but he felt a warm flicker of gratitude deep down.
“Depends on my mood,” Quinn said casually.
