“Let’s meet in half an hour at the mall next to your dance studio,” Quinn said. She’d picked the spot to save Hazel the trouble of traveling far.

“Sounds good,” Hazel replied.

Quinn hung up the phone and headed straight to the agreed-upon mall.

The two women met inside the building. As soon as Hazel spotted Quinn, she looped her arm through hers, acting like they were long-lost sisters.

“Quinn, what made you want to hang out today?” Hazel asked with a bright smile, her tone casual but laced with subtle curiosity.

Ever since Peyton had shared his doubts, Quinn had been on high alert. Now that she was with Hazel in person, she could see what he meant. From the momen they’d met, Hazel had been sizing her up, watching her every reaction.

It was an odd feeling-unplaceable, but definitely there.

“I heard from my brother that you work at the dance studio nearby,” Quinn said, matching Hazel’s warm tone. She didn’t want to give anything away. “I wanted to check out your workplace, and maybe grab some coffee together. We’ll have plenty of chances to hang out from now on, anyway.”

“Of course we can!” Hazel said cheerfully. “But I know your studio is pretty far from here. Don’t go through all that trouble. Next time, I’ll come to you instead.”

She came off as easygoing, always ready with a friendly response. She even seemed thoughtful and considerate-too considerate, maybe.

“It’s no trouble at all. I don’t have much going on these days,” Quinn said. “Let’s wander around the mall for a bit, shall we?”

The two of them walked hand in hand through the stores. Thanks to Kieran, they’d hit it off right away, acting warm and friendly toward each other from the start.

After their shopping spree, they’d bought a ton of stuff. Hazel had insisted on paying for most of Quinn’s purchases, which left Quinn feeling awkward.

She knew Hazel couldn’t be making that much money a dance instructor. She’d tried to turn her down, but Hazel had been so insistent that Quinn had no choice but to accept.

Later, she resolved to tell Kieran about it and make sure he paid Hazel back. It just wouldn’t sit right with her to let Hazel foot the bill on their first shopping tripgether.

Quinn was a principled person. She hated feeling like she owed anyone anything, like she was taking charity.

Quinn took Hazel to a restaurant she used to frequent, eating her to lunch.

“Hazel, how long have you been working at that dance studio?” Quinn asked casually, cutting to the chase. “Have things been going smoothly for you there?”

“Being a dance teacher has been my dream ever since I was a kid,” Hazel replied, her voice soft and sincere. “I absolutely love this job. I’ve been at the studio for almost six or seven years now. It’s been really stable.

“I’ve always adored kids. Being around them makes me feel so happy. Every time I see them laughing and dancing, it feels like it heals a little bit of my childhood pain.”

Her words were sweet, spoken with such genuine warmth that it was hard to doubt her.

“I think doing what you love gives you so much motivation,” Quinn said, nodding in agreement. “It makes you feel grounded, you know? What I do now is something I’m passionate about too. People keep telling me to quit, that it’s too hard.

“But I’ve never thought about giving up. When you’re doing something you love, you’re willing to put in the work-no matter what.”

Quinn felt a real connection with Hazel on this point. Se admired how Hazel had stuck to her dreams all these years. It seemed like the right choice, through and through.

“I competed in a dance contest a while back,” Hazel said, her eyes lighting up at the memory. “Your brother came with me to cheer me on. He said watching me dance on stage was like watching a swan-all bright and shining.

“He’s always supported me in doing what I love. He’s never once tried to make me quit this job.”

When she talked about Kieran, her eyes sparkled. It was clear they were head over heels in love, still in the honeymoon phase of their relationship.
