Kieran truly wanted Quinn and Hazel to become good friends. He cared deeply about Hazel, and he hoped their future as a family would be smooth and happy.

“Don’t worry,” Quinn said, forcing a cheerful tone. “We get along great. She seemed really nice when we chatted. You have nothing to fret about.”

“Hey, actually, I’ve been curious about something,” Quinn said, her voice trailing off, the words sticking in her throat as she debated whether to come clean. “She told you about her family’s preference for sons over daughters, but did she mention anything else? Anything more personal?”

Kieran’s brow furrowed slightly. “What else is there to say? She left that house as soon as she turned eighteen and hasn’t gone back in years. I doubt she ever will. I hate bringing it up when we’re together-it’s just too painful for her.”

Kieran knew where to draw the line. He understood what topics were off-limits, and he refused to drag Hazel back into the trauma of her childhood. He wanted her to move forward, not get stuck in the past.

So Peyton had been right all along. Hazel really hadn’t told Kieran the worst of her secrets.

Quinn’s heart raced as she wrestled with the urge to spill everything. She could barely contain her anxiety.

“Growing up in a home like that can’t have been easy,” Quinn said carefully, testing the waters. “I know she must’ve been through hell. You need to treat her right. But… I don’t know. I can’t shake this feeling that her family story isn’t the whole picture. She seems more complicated than she lets on.”

“What are you getting at?” Kieran’s expression turned serious instantly. He fixed Quinn with a sharp, questioning gaze, sensing she was holding something back.

“It’s just woman’s intuition, that’s all,” Quinn said quickly feigning nonchalance and shrugging her shoulders like it was no big deal. “Relax-you’re overreacting.”

“Quinn, you can’t go throwing around accusations like that,” Kieran said firmly. “She’s probably going to be my wife someday. I want you two to build a good relationship. We’re all going to be family soon. She’s had such a tough life, and I want our family to be the warm, safe place she’s never had.

“She went through so much pain and despair growing up. The fact that she turned out so bright and optimistic? It’s nothing short of amazing. I want to protect her from now on. I never want her to feel that kind of hurt ever again.”

Kieran’s voice softened with affection as he talked about Hazel, his face clouding over with sadness at the thought of her past. He clearly didn’t want to hear a single negative word about her.

It was obvious Kieran was head over heels-completely wrapped around Hazel’s finger.

But Quinn couldn’t stay silent any longer. For Kieran’s ske, for his future happiness, she had to tell him the truth.

“Kieran, there’s something I’ve been struggling with-something I think I need to tell you,” Quinn said, her voice steadying with resolve. “I think we need to be honest about what’s really going on between you two.”

She couldn’t watch her brother keep his head in the sang. If he found out about Hazel’s secret after they were already committed, the fallout would be a thousand times worse than it would be now.

Kieran frowned deeply. “Quinn… did you have Hazel investigated?”

“I’m sorry, Kieran,” Quinn said, her voice earnest. “I did this for you. I couldn’t bear the thought of you getting hurt. I’ve been through that pain before, and I don’t want you to go through it too.”

Quinn’s tone turned serious, her words leaving no room for misunderstanding. She needed Kieran to see that she was acting out of love, not suspicion.
