“He didn’t mean anything by it,” Quinn said gently. “Peyton mentioned giving you some time off to cool down. But this can’t go on forever. What’s done is done. You made your decision-now you need to move
on.”
She looked at her brother, her heart aching. Kieran had lost weight, his eyes dull and lifeless. He’d clearly been through hell these past few days.
She knew he’d poured his heart into the relationship. He’d been willing to overlook everything for Hazel- only to end up heartbroken. As his sister, all she wanted was for him to find happiness.
“I’ve thought about it a lot lately,” Kieran said, his voice quiet. “We were good together, weren’t we? We clicked-shared the same values, the same dreams. I never thought it’d end like this.”
“I guess I’m just bitter,” he admitted. “I can’t seem to let go. But I know I have to. I can’t live in the past forever.”
He told himself this every day. But some days, the pain was too much to bear. He couldn’t stop replaying their time together in his head.
“Have you talked to her at all since you broke up?” Quinn asked. She knew this was the first time Kieran had truly fallen for someone in years.
Kieran shook his head. “I’ve gone by her dance studio a few times. But her coworkers said she quit. She moved out, too-didn’t tell anyone where she went.”
“She’s always been so decisive. Once she makes up her mind, she sticks to it-even if it means lying to herself,” he sighed. “I don’t want to bother her. If she see me, she might run again. There’s no point in chasing her.”
Kieran was a man of principle. He cared about Hazel too much to disrupt her life. If she wanted to move on, he’d let her-even if it killed him.
Quinn hated seeing him like this. She’d never seen her brother so broken. He hadn’t done anything wrong- he’d just wanted the truth. So why was he the one suffering?
Hazel hadn’t done anything wrong either. Her past wasnt her fault. No one was to blame-but s everyone was hurting.
There was no right or wrong answer here. No way to make things right without hurting someone.
“Whatever happens, I’m here for you,” Quinn said firmly “You’ll get through this. I promise. You’ll find someone better-someone who’s right for you.”
“Quinn, can you do me a favor?” Kieran suddenly asked his voice filled with desperation, “Can you try to contact Hazel? I haven’t been able to stop thinking abou her. I’ve wanted to find her a hundred times, but I’m too scared. I’m scared she’ll turn me away.”
“She always said she liked your personality-wanted toe friends with you,” he continued. “If you reach out, she might agree to meet. I need one last chance. If she sys no, I’ll let go for good. But I can’t move on without trying.”
Kieran suddenly laid bare his truest feelings. He’d thought about finding her countless times, but he’d never mustered up the courage to do it.
