Chapter 214 Fearless Retort

Their words were cruel, their resolve unshakable.

Iris couldn’t bear to listen any longer. She just wanted peace and quiet, far away from their nonsense.

“Mr. Reed, I’ve done nothing but act with a clear conscience,” Quinn said steadily. “Think what you want. All that matters is Mrs. Iris Reed knows we mean well.

“Mrs. Iris Reed, I have a lot of work at the company to tend to. I’ll head out now. Please take care of yourself. Don’t let these meaningless things anger you.”

Quinn knew there was no point in staying. Iris’ health was fragile, and her presence would only fuel more arguments-arguments that would only hurt Iris.

Leaving was the only way. It would spare everyone the stress of another fight.

“Off you go then. Don’t worry about me,” Iris said softly. I’m fine, and my personal doctor’s always here.”

Guilt gnawed at her. Quinn had come alone, with no one to stand by her side. She’d only ever acted to help Iris, yet she’d been torn down and unappreciated by Harold and Donna.

As Quinn stepped outside, Donna followed right behind her, calling out to stop her.

“Quinn, don’t think I don’t know what you’re after,” Donna snapped. “You’re just after Iris’ money and property. But I’ll tell you this-her fortune will never fall into the hands of an outsider. Give up that dream

now.”

“Mrs. Reed, if I said I’ve never wanted Iris’ property, you’d never believe me,” Quinn replied coolly. “And I’m not going to waste my breath explaining. We’re worlds apart-there’s no point.

“But I will say this: we’d live a perfectly happy life without your family’s wealth. Even a better one-no more of your meddling, no more of your fights.

“Peyton’s talented enough to succeed at any company. He could start his own business tomorrow and make it a success. We don’t fear you. Even if you take the company, so what? We’re only fighting for Iris

Away from Iris’ ears, there was no need to hold back. They’d gone too far, and she wasn’t going to take it anymore.

She was certain Iris would understand.

Harold stood frozen, stunned into silence. He’d never thought a young woman like Quinn would ever dare to talk to him that way-would ever school him like a child.

“How dare she say that to us?” he sputtered, finally regaining his voice. “Who does she think she is? Why didn’t you say anything? Why did you let her walk away like that?”

He glared at Donna, his voice laced with blame and frustration.

“You didn’t say a single word either!” Donna shot back, her face contorted with anger. “Don’t you dare point fingers at me. Save your nonsense.”

She seethed with resentment, still shaken by Quinn’s unshakable resolve-by the fire in her eyes that had left them both speechless.
