Sure enough, Felix’s expression softened into pity the second he heard Lila’s words. He shot Quinn a disapproving look. “You’re just too nice, Lila. Quinn, do you really have to fight her over this? You’re older than her-can’t you cut her some slack?”
Quinn stared at him, dumbfounded. Fight her? She hadn’t even done anything!
Lila hid a triumphant smile. The more Felix snapped at Quinn, the happier she got. She silently sneered to herself.
How dare Quinn compete with me? Both Felix and his mother clearly prefer me. Iam the one they want.
“Felix, please don’t blame Quinn. It’s all my fault,” Lila said, turning to Quinn with a meek expression. “Quinn, don’t be mad at Felix. If you’re gonna be upset with anyone, be upset
me.”

“First of all, I’m not easily angered. Especially not by people like you two,” Quinn said coolly. “Second, stop calling me ‘Quinn’ like we’re best friends. We’re not. And I’d never want a shameless fake like you as a friend.”
Lila’s face drained of all color. Her eyes welled up with tears, making her look so fragile and helpless that anyone would feel sorry for her-anyone except Quinn, that is. Felix, though? He was completely captivated.
“Quinn! That’s enough!” he roared. “What did Lila ever do to you? I know you’re mad about what’s going on between us, but Lila is innocent! She did nothing wrong!”
“You two are awfully chummy,” Quinn scoffed.
Felix sighed heavily, like he was dealing with a petulant child. “See? You are jealous. I knew it. But Lila is just my sister, Quinn. Nothing more. There’s nothing going on between us.”
“Can you not understand plain words? I. Don’t. Care. Excuse me, miss? Wrap this necklace up for me.”
“Quinn! You’re going too far!” Felix had been trying to stay patient, but now she was being completely unreasonable.
Rage boiled inside him.
How dare she talk to me like that?
Quinn frowned at him. “What are you doing now? Having another tantrum?”
Felix turned to Lila, putting on a warm smile. “Lila, you said you liked this necklace, didn’t you? I’ll buy it for you. How’s that sound?”
“Really? It’s so beautiful!” Lila’s eyes lit up, but she quickly pretended to hesitate. “But Felix…. won’t Quinn be mad? I don’t want her fighting with you because of me. Let’s forget it.”
Her soft, worried tone only made Felix angrier at Quinn. Comparing the two women side by side? Lila was sweet, kind, and considerate-exactly the type of woman he wanted. Quinn? She was just a stubborn, ungrateful shrew.
“It’s fine! She doesn’t want it anyway,” he said dismissively.
“You’re absolutely right. I wouldn’t touch anything you bought with a ten-foot pole.”
