Quinn quickly explained, Mrs. Reed, he had work to take care of. I’m perfectly fine alone. Please don’t blame him for this. He’s already done so much for me.

She’d never asked for anything from him, yet he’d always been there for her when it mattered most.

It was something Felix had never done for her.

Alright then,Eleanor said. If he can’t keep you company, I will. No need to be so formal around me. I actually met you when you were little. You were probably too young to remember.”

You’ve been away from your parents these past few years. Your mother talks about you often and misses you a lot. Now that you’re getting engaged soon, go home and reunite with her,she added warmly.

So Eleanor knew all about her situation.

It made sense. Their families had been close for years. Of course she’d heard the details.

Thank you, Mrs. Reed. I’ll keep that in mind,” Quinn replied.

If you ever need anything, don’t hesitate to tell me,Eleanor said. If Peyton ever treats you badly, I’ll have your back. But I know my son well.

He may seem cold on the surface, but he’s actually very thoughtful. He cares deeply about the people around him. The fact that he agreed to marry you means he likes youa lot. He’d never force himself to be with someone he doesn’t love!

You two might not know each other well yet, but relationships take work. I’m sure you’ll be very happy together,Eleanor said with a warm smile, her eyes fixed on Quinn.

Is that really true?

Quinn wasn’t sure how she felt about Peyton. She didn’t even know why she’d agreed to the engagement.

But now that they were committed, she intended to take it seriously.

Alright, I’ve talked your ear off long enough. I don’t want to pressure you,Eleanor said, changing the subject. Let’s eat before the food gets cold. You can tell Peyton put a lot of thought into this meal!

It was clear Peyton had a close relationship with his mother. And Eleanor’s kindness made Quinn feel at

ease.

After dinner, Eleanor received a call from friends asking her to play cards. She said her goodbyes and left.

Before she went, they exchanged contacts. Eleanor gave Quinn a few more words of advice before finally leaving, satisfied.

Quinn waited for Peyton in the living room late into the night, but he never came home.

He must be swamped with work to stay out this late.

Mabel, does he usually come home this late?Quinn asked.

Mabel has worked here for years. She must know his routines well.

Mr. Reed doesn’t come home every night,Mabel explained. When he does, it’s almost always late. He has a lot on his plate and travels frequently for work.

But when he’s not busy, he always comes home, she added.

Quinn nodded and stood up, heading back to her bedroom.

Even if he had come home, she wouldn’t have known what to say. Their awkwardness around each other made being alone in her room feel like the better option.

Before she knew it, she’d fallen into a deep, dreamless sleep.

The next morning

Quinn was woken up by her phone ringing. She glanced at the screenit was Felix.

She hung up immediately and tossed the phone asíde, closing her eyes again.

But the phone kept ringing, as if Felix was determined to make her answer.

Felix, what do you want?she snapped, finally giving in.

Quinn, why did it take you so long to answer?Felix asked. Can’t we talk this through like adults? It’s been daysyou must have calmed down by now.

I reserved a table at Thea’s for 5 PM tonight. I’ll be waiting for you. We need to talk. If you come, I’ll let the past stay in the past,he said, his tone soft and sincere.

Thea’s was where they’d had their first date. Quinn remembered Felix had brought her ninetynine roses and a beautiful necklaceone he’d picked out himself.

She still had that necklace tucked away somewhere.

There’s nothing left to talk about,” Quinn said coldly. We have no connection anymore. Don’t contact me again.

She moved to hang up, eager to end the conversation.

Feliz snapped, Quinn, even if you don’t want to see me, can’t we part amicably? Why did you have to ruin me? You must know how bad things are at the company. How could you be so cruel?

Felix, you’re the one who cheated. You’re the one who ended us,Quinn replied calmly. Everything I’ve done is just karma. Why are you so angry?

Neither of them had left the other any room to retreat. They’d both made their choicesand now they had to live with them.
