Chapter 69 Unspoken Resentment

But things were different now. She’d broken up with Felix, yet Leo never expected to hear news of her upcoming engagement so soon.
Quinn shook her head gently. “Leo, I know you’re saying this for my own good, but this is my decision. The engagement date is already set-it won’t change.
“And honestly, I think this is for the best. I’ve let my parents down too many times before. This is my chance to make it up to them. As long as they’re happy, that’s all that matters.”
Her voice was firm, no hint of hesitation. From the moment she agreed to the engagement for her parents’ sake, she’d never thought of backing out.
“Alright, let’s drop this unhappy topic,” she said, changing the subject. “I’m going to throw myself into work soon. I hope our collaboration goes smoothly!
“If you come across any suitable projects, let me know. I want to finish my patent as soon as possible.”
Quinn cared most about her patent. She’d poured so much time and effort into it, and she was determined to prove her worth with tangible results.
“Don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye out. Eat up,” Leo said, reaching across the table to serve her food.
After chatting for a while longer, Quinn decided it was time to head back.
Leo had driven himself that night, and he insisted on dropping her off. It was already late, and he wouldn’t feel at ease letting her go alone.
When they arrived, Quinn got out of the car.
“Leo, drive safely on your way back. Text me when you get home!” she said.
Their houses were quite far apart, and it was already dark. She felt grateful and a little worried about him making the trip just to drop her off.
Leo nodded, then started the car and drove away.
He knew this wasn’t Quinn’s house-it was Peyton’s.
It seems they are already living together, and whatever is meant to happen has happened.
The thought left a bitter taste in his mouth, a quiet sadness settling over him.
Back at the villa, Mabel was still awake, waiting for her.
“Miss Hart, you’re home. Is there anything I can do for you?” she asked.
“No, thank you, Mabel. It’s late-go get some rest. I’m ready for bed too,” Quinn replied.
She’d already eaten dinner outside, so there was no need for Mabel to prepare anything else.
Mabel nodded and retreated to her room.

Quinn went upstairs, tidied up, and took a shower before returning to her bedroom.

Suddenly, she heard the sound of a car pulling into the driveway. Looking through the curtains, she saw it was Peyton.
Why is he back so suddenly?
Quinn went downstairs, and they ran into each other face to face in the hallway.
“You’re back,” Quinn said first.
Peyton just nodded faintly, saying nothing.
“Mr. Reed, welcome home. Miss Hart just got back too,” Mabel said, appearing from the kitchen. “I prepared dinner for you-would you like to eat something?”
Peyton usually came home late from work dinners, often drunk. He always ate a little something before bed to soothe his stomach for the next morning.
“No, thank you. You can rest,” he replied coldly.
Today’s Peyton was nothing like his usual self-distant to everyone around him.
Quinn had thought it was her imagination earlier, but now she knew it wasn’t.
“Very well. Good night to both of you,” Mabel said, leaving them alone.
The room fell into an awkward silence.
Quinn wondered if he was upset about her going out to dinner with another man. But they each had their own circles and lives, and their interaction had been innocent.
Surely he won’t mind that much… right?
After thinking it over, she decided she should explain.
“Leo and I have been friends for years. We go way back to school, she said slowly. “I needed help with my patent, so I gave him a call.”
She’d already mentioned this when the three of them met earlier, but she wasn’t sure if he’d believed her.
Peyton frowned. “I’m your fiancé. Why did you think of asking someone else for help first, instead of me?”
Is he accusing me?
Quinn felt flustered, unsure how to respond.
“Y-You’re overthinking it,” she stammered. “Leo’s currently working on projects in this field, and we’re good friends. That’s why I asked him.
“And I know you’re busy every day. I didn’t want to bother you with such a small matter. If it were something important, I would’ve come to you first-I promise!”
