Chapter 76 Don’t Give Up
“How did this happen? Where’s the maid?” Peyton bent down and lifted the woman into his arms.

Tears streamed down her face as she curled up against him, clinging tightly. “She had an emergency at home and left. I’m all alone.”
“Peyton, I hate feeling like a useless burden,” she sobbed. “I just wanted to get myself a glass of water. But I’m so helpless.
“Will I never be able to take care of myself again? Why me… I’m such a failure.”
Her cries grew louder, more agitated. She began hitting her lifeless legs in frustration.
Peyton grabbed her hands to stop her. “Don’t do that. I’ve contacted the best specialists abroad for you. They’ll be here soon to start rehabilitation.
“They said you’re young. It’s serious, but you will walk again. Just be patient. Don’t give up-don’t torture yourself like this!”
He carried her to the sofa. Her clothes were soaked, so he went to find a change for her..
“Change into this. I’ll make you something to eat in the kitchen,” he said.
“Peyton, don’t leave me,” she begged, tears still falling. “I don’t want food. I just want you to stay.”
“You haven’t eaten all day. You need to eat-no arguments,” he insisted. “You know your body’s condition. If you keep fighting, you will stand on your own again. Trust me. Give yourself a chance-and give me one too.”
Peyton cared deeply about her, and he was determined to help her recover.
But the woman shook her head. “I can’t eat. I’m just a useless invalid/Lying here every day is torture.”
“Before you came, I thought about ending it all. Being stuck in a wheelchair, trapped… I want freedom,” she cried, looking utterly helpless.
“Wendy, be strong!” Peyton said firmly, holding her gaze. “Listen to me. The specialists haven’t given up on you. So don’t give up on yourself. The life you want-you’ll have it.
“Trust me one more time. Please?”
His patience and resolve finally made her waver. She nodded slowly. “For you, Peyton, I’ll keep fighting.”
“Good. Change your clothes. I’ll make dinner,” Peyton said, turning to the kitchen.
After he left, Wendy Parker changed into the clothes he’d given her.
Soon, he returned with a plate of spaghetti. “Come eat.”
“Peyton, this is the first time you’ve cooked for me. I know it’ll be delicious,” she said, smiling through her tears-looking genuinely happy.

“Your spaghetti is amazing,” Wendy said after taking a bite. “I wish you could stay with me forever. I feel so safe when you’re here… so hopeless when I’m alone.
“Am I too dependent on you? I can’t seem to live without you. I know I need to fix this, but I…” She trailed off, hanging her head in despair.
“I can’t stay with you forever. I have my own work,” Peyton replied gently but firmly. “But I’ll be here whenever you need me. And I’ll find those specialists as soon as possible.”
He couldn’t make her any promises. He’d always kept a deliberate distance between them.
Wendy’s eyes filled with sadness at his words.
“I know you’re getting engaged soon,” she said quietly. “Once you have a fiancée, you won’t be able to spend so much time with me. I’ve tried to prepare for it… but it still hurts.”
