Chapter 78 The Unwanted Appointment

“Sure,” Peyton replied, respecting her decision without further comment.

After breakfast together, they went their separate ways to handle their own business.

Instead of heading straight to the office, Peyton drove to Wendy’s house. She’d stayed up all night, so she was still fast asleep when he arrived.

A maid answered the door. She’d taken the day off yesterday but had come bright and early this morning. Not wanting to disturb her employer, she’d let Wendy sleep in.

“Mr. Reed, you’re here,” the maid greeted him politely.

“Miss Parker is still in bed. Would you like to wait for her?”

“Wake her up,” Peyton said coldly. “I’m taking her out today.”

He’d gone to great lengths to bring in a top psychologist from across the country. The specialist’s schedule was packed. They couldn’t afford to keep her waiting.

If it weren’t for Peyton’s personal request, the psychologist would never have agreed to come.

A short while later, the maid wheeled Wendy out of her bedroom. She looked flustered, eager to see Peyton.

“Peyton, what a nice surprise! You’re here so early,” she exclaimed, her voice laced with excitement. “If I’d known you were coming, I would’ve gotten up sooner. I’m so sorry.

“Give me five minutes to get ready. Just wait for me, okay?”

Wendy’s heart was racing. It was rare for Peyton to visit her in the morning, let alone come uninvited.

He only ever showed up when she called him in tears, begging for help. Never like this-on his own accord.

Her mind wandered, imagining he might be taking her out for a relaxing day. It would be perfect.

“Take your time,” Peyton said.

Eager to leave with him, Wendy got ready in record time.

Once she was done, Peyton helped her into the car. Before they left, he turned to the maid with a stern order.

“Hire another staff member starting tomorrow. I don’t want a repeat of yesterday.”

Wendy was still recovering. She couldn’t be left alone. If something like yesterday’s accident happened again, Peyton would never forgive himself.

He’d suggested hiring more help before, but Wendy had refused. She’d claimed she didn’t like having too many people in the house, saying it made her feel cramped.

But Peyton knew her real motive. She wanted him to have an excuse to drop by when the house was empty.

“Peyton, are we going out for fun?” Wendy asked, beaming. “Did you bring me out to cheer me up after yesterday? I wore my pink dress. Do you think it looks pretty?”

She’d dressed herself carefully, her mood a complete 180 from the day before.

“Just come with me. Peyton said, keeping his destination a secret.

Taking his word for it, Wendy didn’t press further. She climbed into the car eagerly.

But as they drew closer, Wendy realized with a jolt where they were heading-the hospital.

Panic flashed across her face. “Peyton! I thought we were going out to relax! I got all dressed up for nothing! Are you taking me to the hospital? There’s nothing wrong with my legs. I don’t want to go!

“Peyton, let’s go home, please! Or we can go somewhere else-anywhere but here! I really don’t want to go to the hospital!”

Her voice trembled with fear, her body stiffening with resistance.

But Peyton had come too far to back down. He was determined to see this through.

“Wendy, listen to me,” he said firmly. “I’ve arranged for you to see the best psychologist in the country. I know you’ve been cooped up at home, feeling miserable. Talking to someone will help you relax.

“I’ve sent your latest leg scans to a specialist too. I’ll let you know as soon as I hear back. You need to cooperate with the treatment-this is important.

“You ended up like this because of me. It’s my responsibility to help you get better. I want you to live a normal life again like everyone else.”

Peyton’s tone was serious, his words heavy with guilt.

If it weren’t for the debt he owed her, he would never have gone to such lengths.

But this burden had weighed on him for far too long. He had to see it through to the end, no matter what. Otherwise, his conscience would never be at peace.

“But Peyton, I… I don’t need this,” Wendy stammered, her eyes welling up with tears.

“Wendy, be reasonable. There’s nothing to be scared of,” Peyton said gently, softening his tone a little. “The psychologist just wants to chat with you-nothing more. I can tell you’ve been unhappy lately. This will do you good. I promise.”
