“If you’re truly okay, that’s a relief. I’ve been worried about you,” Peyton said patiently, his calm voice wrapping around her like a blanket.

To Wendy, his gentle demeanor felt like special affection. His serious expression made her heart flutter, filling her with warmth.

“I know, Peyton. I know everything you do is for my own good,” she cooed, her eyes locking onto his with a soft, intimate gaze. “You don’t have to feel guilty. I’ve never blamed you. What happened back then was my choice-nothing to do with you.

“Just having you by my side makes me happy. I don’t have any mental health issues. But I appreciate you caring enough to bring me here,” she added, her tone growing even more delicate.

“I’ll cooperate with whatever you ask of me. Anything for you.”

For years, Peyton had carried a heavy burden of guilt over Wendy. It was a pain he’d never escape, a debt he felt he could never fully repay.

He’d spent years trying to make amends, wondering if she’d ever walk again—or if this cycle of care would ever end.

When they arrived at the hospital, they met the psychologist. Wendy was led into a private room for her

session.

Peyton waited outside, sitting quietly for over an hour.

When Wendy finally emerged, the psychologist followed closely behind.

“Mr. Reed, she is in good mental health-no serious issues,” the doctor said with a reassuring smile. “Just take her out more often to relax. Feel free to call me if anything comes up.”

Peyton let out a quiet sigh of relief. “Thank you, Dr. Hayes.”

“Before you leave, could I speak with you privately? There are some things I need to discuss,” the doctor, Megan Hayes, said, her expression shifting to one of seriousness.

Peyton had suspected this. He’d brought Wendy here because he’d noticed her erratic behavior and fragile state. Something was clearly wrong. Now, his hunch was confirmed.

“We’ve been friends for years, so I’ll get straight to the point. I’m pressed for time,” Megan said, closing the door behind them.

Peyton nodded. He needed the full truth to help Wendy get the right treatment.

“Mr. Reed, I need to be honest with you. Her mental health issues are more serious than she lets on. And I’m afraid… you might be the cause.” Megan paused, choosing her words carefully.

They’d known each other a long time. She’d flown back specifically to help. She owed Peyton the unvarnished truth.

Peyton froze, stunned by the revelation.

Seeing his silence, Megan continued, “I know you’re getting engaged soon. That’s weighing heavily on her. She’s obsessed with the idea, and it’s clear she has romantic feelings for you.”

Peyton had suspected as much, though Wendy had never explicitly said anything.

“She won’t admit it, but she’s not just looking for your care or financial support. She’s craving your love,” Megan explained.

“If you marry someone else, she’ll lose the one thing she’s been clinging to. It will destroy her. Her mental state is already fragile. Her eyes don’t hold the same light as a healthy person’s.

“I’m not exaggerating. Your engagement could push her over the edge.”

Megan’s words were stark, but she didn’t overstate the danger. She’d seen the desperation in Wendy’s eyes during their session.

She added, “One more thing-she’s not as innocent as she seems. She’s manipulative, with a lot of hidden. agendas. You need to be careful, or she’ll drag you into her schemes.

“And her leg condition is worsening. If it continues, her emotional state will only deteriorate further.”

As a friend, Megan hated delivering such harsh news. But Peyton needed to know the truth to protect both himself and Wendy.

She trusted Peyton to handle it—he was capable of finding a solution.
