Eleanor noticed everyone had been talking for a while. It was time to eat, and she didn’t want to dwell on upsetting topics that would ruin Iris’ mood.
Peyton nodded in agreement. The group sat down and enjoyed a proper meal together.
Iris had been deeply affected by the earlier conflict-especially since it happened on her birthday.
After dinner with Iris, the couple prepared to leave the Reed Manor.
Quinn hadn’t been home in ages. She was eager to visit her parents.
“Mrs. Iris Reed still seems upset,” she said to Peyton. “Why don’t you stay here with her? I can go home alone just fine.”
Quinn worried about leaving Iris after the big argument. She hated the thought of Iris alone.
They didn’t visit often. Even though Iris was used to living by herself and had endured loneliness for years, Quinn believed they owed her more of their time as family.
“Quinn, your thoughtfulness alone makes me happy,” Iris smiled. “I know you’re a kind, careful girl. But don’t worry about me. I don’t want to ruin your time together. You two should stick by each other no matter what.
“As long as you’re both happy, I’ll be happy too. Things will only get better from here!”
Iris felt immense joy. She’d always known she’d made the right choice in approving of Quinn.
“Grandma, I’m staying with you tonight,” Peyton said gently. He was in a somber mood too. While he appreciated being trusted with the family company, that wasn’t what mattered most to him.
Iris had never fully fallen out with Harold before. She’d always tolerated his family’s antics. But their behavior at her birthday dinner must have deeply hurt her.
“That’s really not necessary,” Iris insisted. “Go on-take Quinn home.”
“Let Peyton stay,” Quinn said firmly. “I haven’t seen my parents in so long. Now that we’re already in town, I want to visit them.
“I’ll come back after seeing them. We can both stay with you for a few days. If you’re up for it, we could even take you back with us for a short trip.”
Quinn felt sorry for Iris. Iris had been strong her entire life, yet she still had to deal with family conflict.
Quinn doubted she could handle such pain and pressure herself. She could sense how much Iris loved her sops, despite everything.
Seeing how determined they both were, Iris stopped protesting.
“I’m staying too!” Eleanor chimed in. “It’s been ages since I played cards with you, Iris. Why don’t we have a game tonight?”

“Wonderful idea!” Iris said. “But before we start, Peyton must personally drive Quinn home. And bring some gifts for her parents.”
Iris was always thoughtful and thorough in her considerations.
She didn’t want Peyton to neglect Quinn’s family, so she made sure to remind him.
“Don’t worry, Grandma. I already have gifts prepared,” Peyton replied with a slight shake of his head. “I’ll get Quinn home safely, then come right back.”
Their houses were only a 30-minute drive apart—round trip.
“Good boy,” Iris smiled warmly. Lately, the happiest thing for her had been seeing her grandson find someone he truly loved, someone she approved of too.
Peyton and Quinn left the manor together.
On the way home, Quinn couldn’t help but ask, “Why didn’t you give your grandma the gift Wendy brought? Aren’t you worried she’ll ask about it if she sees your grandina later?”
She wasn’t sure why, but seeing Wendy and Peyton together had bothered her. The thought had lingered in her mind.
She’d secretly wondered how Iris would react to Wendy’s gift-never expecting Peyton to keep it from her.
“Why would I give it to her?” Peyton replied flatly.
“She doesn’t matter to me.”
He felt nothing but deep guilt toward Wendy-a debt he knew he might never repay in this lifetime.
Over the years, he’d tried countless ways to make amends. He’d kept going because he couldn’t forgive himself for what happened. But Wendy herself? She didn’t hold a special place in his heart.
