He felt absolutely nothing for Wendy. When it came to matters of the heart, he’d always kept his distance- afraid she might misinterpret his kindness.
Quinn wasn’t sure if he was just saying this to make her happy. But somehow, his words put her mind at
ease.
“We’re getting engaged soon,” she said gently. “I’m glad I found out about this before then. I want to share this burden with you-not let you face it alone. And if Wendy ever needs to talk, tell her she can come to me. Sometimes women understand each other better.”
“I don’t think you need to put so much pressure on yourself,” she continued. “No one wanted what happened back then. But you did the right thing by helping her. I would’ve done the same.”
Quinn spoke with genuine understanding, feeling a twinge of sympathy for him.
Every time she visited his family, she couldn’t help but reflect. How could he have grown up in such a toxic environment? He must not have been very happy as a child.
“Thank you, Quinn,” Peyton said softly.
It was the first time anyone had offered to share his pain. Her kindness and understanding surprised him, warming his heart. He’d waited so many years for someone like her—and it had all been worth it.
“You don’t have to thank me,” she smiled. “You’ve been taking care of me this whole time. I might not be able to help with your family troubles, but I’ll always stand by you. You’re doing the right thing-never back down to them!”
Quinn spoke with unwavering determination.
Soon, they arrived at her house. Knowing her daughter was coming home, Doris had prepared a feast-her table loaded with delicious dishes.
Kieran had dropped all his work to be home too, eager to have dinner with his sister.
Peyton couldn’t help but envy their family. Even though they’d had their share of disagreements, their hearts were always together. They truly loved and cared for one another.
He’d grown up in a home filled with conflict and scheming. Everyone was out for themselves, putting money and power above family bonds.
Eleanor had always been good to him, fighting to get him what he deserved. She’d never worked at the company, but she’d sacrificed so much over the years.
She was a decisive, free-spirited woman-always handling things efficiently. In many ways, she was just like Iris both strong, independent women.
Iris had been widowed young, left to raise two sons alone. She’d built up the family business not just for herself, but to give her boys a better life.
Unfortunately, neither of her sons had lived up to her expectations. They’d relied on her completely all these years. Harold, at least, cared about his own small family-his wife and son.

But Peyton’s father was a different story. He spent his days drinking and gambling, rarely home. It was his cowardice and irresponsibility that had forced Eleanor to become the strong woman she was today.
Peyton had never had a good relationship with his father. He was terrified of his drunken rages. Every time his father came home, they’d end up fighting-and sometimes his father would even hit him.
Iris and Eleanor would always step in to protect him. But his father was stubborn and cruel, treating him more like an enemy than a son.
Since Peyton had taken over the company, his father had disappeared from their lives. Rumor had it he’d gone abroad to live a life of luxury. Peyton sent him a generous monthly allowance-enough to keep him comfortable and out of their hair.
Eleanor had regretted marrying him for years. She’d long since stopped trying to control him, letting him do as he pleased.
Once Peyton took charge of the company, Eleanor had finally been able to let go of many worries. These past few years had been happy for her. Peyton supported everything she did-he knew how much she’d suffered over the years.
Watching the Hart family laugh and enjoy their simple dinner together, Peyton felt a deep sense of longing. But he also felt warmth in his heart.
From now on, he’d be part of a loving family too. He’d be with the woman he loved, and he’d finally have the sense of belonging he’d always craved.
Quinn was his salvation. Whenever he faced difficulties, she was the first person he thought of. He’d spent so long trying to win her over-and soon, she’d be his forever.
