“Fieldwork?”
“Yes.”
Kate explained further. “Mr. Dalton goes deep into impoverished areas to understand what the people actually need. He's also pushed for several public welfare businesses. The people love him.”
“But precisely because he's so grounded and doesn't mingle with the other leaders, everyone gradually stopped paying attention to him.”
Not only that.
Some people even secretly sabotaged him. Burt was an honest man who didn't sweat the small stuff, but if it was something major, he'd fight tooth and nail for justice.
“You seem to hold him in high regard.” Luella said, hands in her pockets as she looked down at Kate.
“He really is a good person.” Kate lowered her head, pressing her lips together. “He's the most public-minded leader I've ever seen.”
It was just a pity.
In such a corrupt environment, he was treated as an outcast.
“Got it.” Luella nodded slightly, a deeper meaning in her tone. “Tell him to come to my office later.”
“Huh?” Kate blinked, nodding skeptically.
Was Mr. Langley starting to build a faction?
If Luella ever became Executive Chief and promoted Mr. Dalton, Kate would actually be quite happy.
It was just a shame. The position of Executive Chief would never go to her.
Even though Luella was clearly highly capable.
Thinking about this, Kate frowned, her mood dampening.
Was she helping the villains by keeping an eye on her?
“Stop spacing out. Go home,” Luella said, turning back.
“But my shift isn't over...” Kate hesitated, afraid to move.
“It's your birthday today. You can clock out early,” Luella turned her head, the corners of her lips turning up. “Relax, Lachlan Langley went to another city today, and your immediate boss followed him like a loyal lapdog. No one's going to check your hours.”
“If you can leave early, why dawdle? Why work so hard for those people? Silly.”
Birthday?
Kate stiffened, suddenly realizing it really was her birthday.
She hadn't even remembered it herself. How did Mr. Langley know?
She really was a decent person.
“?”
Burt stared at her seriously, then suddenly laughed. “Mr. Langley, I think you've got the wrong guy. I have the least amount of influence in this entire building.”
That was exactly why no one had ever tried to recruit him.
“Don't worry about that.” Luella gave a faint smile, raising an eyebrow. “If we succeed, the Vice Executive Chief seat is yours.”
“Ha.” Burt treated it as the ravings of a madman and played along. “If you actually pull it off, keep the Vice Executive Chief title. Just allocate more funding to me. I've got several civil welfare projects stuck in limbo, and the people are desperate.”
He didn't want power; he wanted money?
Anyone who sat in the Vice Executive Chief seat could easily embezzle millions.
“Mr. Langley, do you have a moment right now?” Burt had a sudden flash of inspiration and asked cautiously. “I have a project. Would you be interested in investing?”
Luella opened the proposal and saw it was for affordable housing.
She raised an eyebrow.
Perfect.
She was absolutely certain now—Burt was exactly the man she needed.
Next, she would set her plan in motion to drag Lachlan Langley off his throne.
