"Sis!"
"Luella!"
"Sis!"
Completely unaware that his sister was currently one of the most famous people in Eclara City, Jared screamed at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing through the terminal.
The passing travelers startled, naturally turning their heads to see what the commotion was about.
"Are you trying to get me killed?!"
Terrified of being recognized, Luella grabbed Jared and yanked him to her side, whispering a fierce threat. "Who's your sister? Stop shouting!"
Hearing her harsh tone, Jared didn't argue. He just hung his head, huge teardrops spilling over his eyelashes and silently hitting the floor. He looked so incredibly pitiful that it tugged at the heartstrings.
Realizing she had been a bit too harsh—after all, the kid was only five—Luella pursed her lips and lowered her voice. "You know what happened to your parents and your sister, right?"
"Yeah."
Jared gave a small nod, looking up at her with a pale face and red-rimmed eyes. "Dad did some really bad things. Mom and Esme too..."
"I know they were always mean to you," Jared's crisp little voice wavered. "I'm sorry, Luella. I don't know how to make it up to you."
"I'm too little right now, and nobody will hire me to work, so I can't make money. But I promise, when I grow up and get rich, I'll give it all to you."
Listening to Jared's earnest promise, Luella felt her emotions knot into a complicated mess. Frustrated, she ran a hand through her hair, her voice dropping. "You don't hate me?"
Jared shook his head, answering solemnly. "If you do bad things, you have to pay the price. I understand that."
At least he had a sense of reason. He wasn't entirely a lost cause.
"If you really don't want to see me, I'll leave right now," Jared sniffled, aggressively wiping his tears away. He grabbed his tiny suitcase and turned to go, letting out pitiful, dramatic sobs as he walked away. "Waaaaah..."
Watching his tiny, trembling back, Luella finally broke. "If you're going to stay by my side, you have to listen to me."
Jared's footsteps stopped instantly. He spun around, his tear-filled eyes suddenly shining like stars. "Really?"
She wasn't chasing him away? He could stay?
"No, it's a trap!" Luella looked away, grabbing her luggage and continuing toward the exit.
"Wait for me!"
