"So bossy."
Luella stared into his eyes, rising on her tiptoes as the smile on her lips deepened. "But I love it."
If he hadn't been so shamelessly persistent, she never would have fallen for him or changed her plans to come to Eclara City.
"I love it too."
Jimmie's Adam's apple bobbed. His thumb gently traced her cheekline, his voice a dark, tempting murmur. "Since we've seen the living room, how about I give you a tour of the bedroom?"
"The bedroom?"
Faced with a man whose looks were practically illegal, Luella's cheeks flushed crimson. "I suppose we could... take a look?"
Just as Jimmie moved to sweep her into his arms, a bright, cheerful voice piped up from behind them. "Hi, Jimmie! Your house is huge!"
Jared!
It was that little brat again!
Realizing Jared had arrived, Luella practically leaped out of Jimmie's embrace, frantically smoothing out her clothes.
Scared her half to death.
Thank god Jimmie hadn't suggested "testing out" the living room sofa.
"Jared, what are you doing here?"
The smile froze on Jimmie's face. He shot his future brother-in-law a deeply frustrated look.
"Clark brought me," Jared said, adjusting his brand-new little backpack, which was stuffed to the brim with snacks. His wide eyes darted curiously between his sister and her fiancé. "Jimmie, what were you two just talking about? Looking at the bedroom?"
Luella opened her mouth, but her throat felt entirely too dry to produce a sound. She was mortified.
"Yeah."
Jimmie, far more composed, simply reached out and ruffled the boy's hair.
"Let's go look at it together!" Jared's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Come on, let's go see the bedroom."
Clark, who had trailed in right behind the kid, took one look at the awkward tension radiating off the couple and instantly deduced what he had interrupted.
"I am so sorry, boss. I just turned around to park the car, and he sprinted in here on his own. Tell me we didn't interrupt anything?!"
Jimmie said absolutely nothing, opting instead to deliver a lethal, silent glare that commanded Clark to reflect on his life choices.
It's over. That raise he had just been promised was definitely getting revoked.
——
After unpacking the luggage.
The clock struck 10:00 PM.
Luella blinked at him, her expression clearly saying: What do you think?
"Jimmie!"
Jared refused to give up, his little fists pounding on the door. He sounded like he was crying. "Sis! Sis!"
"I'll go check."
Realizing something was actually wrong, Jimmie let out a helpless chuckle, releasing Luella to go unlock the door.
Jared stood there clutching a small pillow, barefoot, his chest heaving with hiccuping sobs. "Jimmie, I'm scared."
"Scared of what?" Jimmie looked down at the sniffling kid.
Luella had pulled on a robe and walked up beside him.
"I'm scared of ghosts," Jared sniffled loudly.
"?"
Luella tilted her head, nearly bursting into laughter.
So much for the brave little man who swore to protect her.
What a kid!
