"Sis, can I sleep with you guys?"
Jared hugged his little pillow tight. Because he had been crying for a while, his nose and eyes were completely red.
Tiny, crystalline tears still clung to his eyelashes. He looked unbelievably pitiful.
"How old are you again?" Luella frowned.
"Five." Jared honestly held up five chubby fingers and let out another pathetic hiccup. "Sis, I promise I won't kick the blankets off."
Back home, Megan had always been there to tuck him in and soothe him to sleep.
Jimmie's house was too big, and no one had come to tuck him in. He was genuinely terrified.
Five years old.
Right.
A "snot-nosed hero" right in the middle of kindergarten.
"Is it okay?" Luella glanced back at Jimmie. After all, half of this bed belonged to him.
"It's fine."
Jimmie offered a gentle smile, speaking softly. "Looks like he cried for quite a while. He must have been absolutely terrified to muster up the courage to come knock."
Sure, it ruined the mood, but the kid was trying to be brave.
"If you dare kick the blankets off, I'm throwing you in the trash can," Luella grumbled, shifting aside. "Come on, get in."
"Thanks, Sis." Jared dragged his blanket inside, struggling slightly with the weight. As he waddled past Jimmie, he gave a very polite little bow and mumbled, "Thanks, Jimmie."
"Well, aren't you polite."
Jimmie's lips curved up in amusement as he patted the boy's head. "Sleep in the middle."
He didn't want the kid rolling off the edge of the bed.
"Okay."
Jared wiped his face and dutifully crawled into the exact center of the mattress, lying flat on his back.
Soon enough.
Luella and Jimmie climbed into bed, flanking him on the left and right.
This was his very first time getting to sleep next to his sister.
All of Jared's earlier grievances instantly melted into sheer joy.
He gripped the edge of his blanket excitedly, turning his head to look at Luella, who already had her eyes closed. He whispered, "Sis—"
"Shut it."
Luella's voice was sharp and uncompromising. "Eyes closed, don't move, go to sleep."
"Oh..."
Jared miserably withdrew his gaze, stiffening his little body into a perfectly straight line, truly too scared to move an inch.
"Go to sleep."
Jimmie reached over and gently patted the boy's chest until the anxious furrow between his brows finally smoothed out.
It didn't take long for him to drift off into a deep sleep.
Watching the woman and the little boy sleeping soundly next to him, a very strange, entirely new feeling bloomed in Jimmie's chest.
But she'd have to tape his mouth shut first.
"Sis, good morning," Jared mumbled, awkwardly rubbing his head. "I had a nightmare. I dreamed you threw me away."
"Oh."
Luella paused, softening her tone slightly. "Go brush your teeth and come eat breakfast."
"Okay!"
Jared obediently scurried off to wash his face and brush his teeth, then hurried back to sit right beside Luella.
Jimmie had warmed up some milk for him and made him a fried egg sandwich.
Everything he loved to eat.
"Thanks, Jimmie," Jared said smoothly, completely used to the name now.
"You're welcome."
Jimmie sat across from Luella, resting his chin on his hand. He watched the woman and the little boy eating earnestly, his eyes overflowing with warmth. The emptiness that had lingered in his heart for so long felt completely filled.
"Luella."
Jimmie kept his gaze fixed on her face, his voice low and raspy.
"Hm?"
Luella looked up, her cheeks puffed out from the bread she was chewing.
She looked exactly like Jared—ridiculously cute.
