"Her appetite hasn't been great," the housekeeper answered honestly. "Maybe it's because eating alone is too lonely."
Harold's gaze deepened, frightening the housekeeper into quickly averting her eyes.
"Make her some nutritious soup." Harold pursed his lips, his voice tight. "And from now on, I'll be staying here."
"Oh?"
The housekeeper was stunned for a few seconds before breaking into a wide smile. "Yes, sir. I'll get everything prepared immediately."
—
When she woke up again.
The sky was already dark, and Harold was nowhere to be found.
The housekeeper explained the situation and handed Lorelei a package sent over from the main estate.
An invitation for tomorrow's party.
It was the Landon family's golden anniversary, and the entire upper echelon of Australis society was invited.
"That's what the young master said," the housekeeper said, beaming. "He also said he'll come find you the second he's done."
"He's always hated these kinds of events," Lorelei murmured absentmindedly as she rubbed her ankle. "It doesn't matter if he comes or not."
"Ma'am..."
The housekeeper leaned in, smiling brightly. "Sir seems like a completely different person. He's so attentive to you now."
"He has changed." Lorelei looked at the medication on her nightstand, her thoughts a tangled mess. "I just don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing."
She suddenly felt like she couldn't read Harold's mind at all anymore.
—
After the housekeeper left.
Lorelei dialed her best friend's number. "Any progress on what I asked you to look into?"
"A tiny bit," her friend replied softly. "The girl Harold liked was supposedly in our graduating class. But exactly who it is, I still don't know."
In their class, and someone who knew Harold.
Lorelei thought for a moment, and suddenly a girl's face popped into her mind.
A girl from the class next door, one of Harold's underclassmen who had gone abroad for further studies three years ago.
"Oh please, they're getting divorced. How could they show up together?"
"Divorce?" The girl's voice carried, drawing the attention of Several nearby guests. She sounded even more smug. "Wow, about to be divorced and crashing a golden anniversary? She's clearly just here to ruin the vibe."
The moment she said that.
All eyes in the vicinity turned sharply to focus on Lorelei.
Lorelei looked back and realized the ones talking were Lexi's friends.
Everyone knew exactly how she ended up as Mrs. Houston.
In their social circle, no one ever took her seriously.
Most treated her like a walking joke.
"What nonsense are you guys spouting?"
Lexi giggled coquettishly, intentionally baiting the crowd. "I heard my brother-in-law is back in Australis. Surely he's going to escort my sister tonight."
"Then where is he?" Her friend added fuel to the fire. "He's back in town and still refuses to be seen with her? Just how broken is their relationship?"
It looked like the divorce rumors were practically confirmed fact!
