Don't Mess with the Girl with Candy novel Chapter 1514

"He's not dead."

Lorelei looked up with tear-filled eyes, her voice raspy. "Don't say such horrible things."

She couldn't bear to hear any words related to death right now.

She's actually defending him.

Harold tightened his jaw, a bitter taste of jealousy pooling in his chest. "Who is it then? Can you tell me?"

"I promise, I won't do anything to him." Harold fought back the suffocating ache in his chest, forcing himself to stay calm. "I will compete with him fairly. But if I truly can't win, and you absolutely must have him..."

At that, Harold let out a soft sigh, his tone gentling. "Then I'll let you go."

"You'd divorce me?"

Lorelei had just been crying, and her voice still held a soft, tearful waver that effortlessly tugged at his heartstrings. "Weren't you the one vowing never to sign the papers before? Now you're suddenly being this generous?"

"Yeah."

Harold nodded, his smile utterly helpless. "I'm afraid of making you unhappy."

"If being with him is what gives you joy and makes you smile."

"Lorelei, I'll set you free."

He would simply make the same choice he did three years ago.

Even though it would kill him, it was fine...

He figured he must have owed her a massive debt in his past life. Since he had fallen into her hands in this one, she could torment him however she pleased.

"Oh," Lorelei sniffled, her words slightly muffled. "How generous. Should I have a trophy made for you?"

A certificate reading 'Most Selfless Ex-Husband of the Century', awarded to: Harold Houston.

A trophy?

She certainly knew exactly where to stab him!

Harold shifted his body and winced, unable to tell if the agonizing pain was radiating from his injuries or his heart.

"Are you okay?"

Lorelei panicked and leaned in immediately, her eyes full of worry. "Should I call the doctor?"

"I want you to stay. Will you promise me that?" Harold seized the moment to grasp her hand, his gaze intensely dark.

"He had a terrible attitude toward me. Always walking around with a cold face."

Lorelei ignored his question, her voice turning choked. "Which makes sense, I suppose. We barely knew each other, so I thought it was completely normal that he didn't like me."

"Stop."

Harold cut her off. This time, he was absolutely certain the crushing pain was coming from his heart. "I thought you were in love with someone else. I was terrified to confess how I felt."

He had been petrified that if he spoke the truth, he wouldn't even be allowed to remain her "brother's friend."

"It would have been better if we had both been mute back then."

Lorelei looked up, a bitter smile touching her lips. "That way we wouldn't have said stupid things and misunderstood each other."

"Fifteen years..."

Harold murmured those words, his thumb gently brushing against Lorelei's cheek, his voice impossibly tender. "5,745 days, 131,400 hours, and countless more seconds."

"Lori, how am I ever supposed to make up these fifteen missed years to you?"

"I should have asked you much sooner. I'm so sorry."

Harold caressed the girl's face, his heart aching beyond description.
