"It wasn't entirely your fault either." Lorelei shook her head, her fingers gripping the edge of the blanket as she whispered softly.
"So..."
Harold held Lorelei's hand, his dark eyes locking onto hers deeply, his voice raspy. "Lori, do we still need to get that divorce?"
"Hmm?"
Lorelei looked up, meeting a gaze so intense it felt like it could pull her very soul in. Her heart fluttered wildly.
"A divorce could work," Harold's lips curved upward into a low chuckle. "Then I could properly pursue you, and we could get married all over again."
"What do you say?"
Lorelei stared at him, blinking her eyes rapidly, looking genuinely intrigued by the idea.
She had never been properly courted before; it actually sounded like it could be quite fun.
Harold's smile instantly froze. He had just been making a lighthearted joke!
Divorce? Not a chance in hell—not in this lifetime!
"Hiss—"
Unsure of how to backtrack, a spark of inspiration hit Harold, and he suddenly twisted his face in agony.
"Wh-What's wrong?" Lorelei immediately tensed up, leaning in to support his arm. "Where does it hurt? Your hand? Your leg?"
He had fallen down a flight of stairs and was battered everywhere. Lorelei truly couldn't tell which specific injury was flaring up.
"Everything hurts."
Harold lifted his head slightly, closing the gap between them until his intoxicatingly deep voice brushed against her. "I need a painkiller."
"Painkillers? I'll go get some for you!"
Lorelei nodded frantically, rushing to get up and fetch a nurse. But the moment she moved, a large hand clamped firmly around her wrist.
By the time she realized what was happening.
She had already collapsed into Harold's embrace. The man's handsome face magnified in her vision, his warm breath fanning over her cheek. "Isn't my painkiller right here?"
"What?"
Lorelei's eyelashes fluttered. The moment the word left her mouth, his lips crashed down, sealing hers completely.
"Harold..."
Lorelei's eyes went wide. Terrified of hurting him, she weakly pressed her hands against his chest, trying to put some distance between them. "You're still hurt. Juniper said you can't make any strenuous movements."
"This doesn't count as strenuous."
Harold chased her lips, kissing her again and again, leaving her utterly breathless and dizzy. "Lori, stop squirming, or you really will bump into my wounds."
