Don't Mess with the Girl with Candy novel Chapter 1789

Ebony Fox's eyes narrowed. She tilted her chin toward her desk and said very seriously, "I'm currently on a video call with Kurt."

Polly stood rooted to the spot, her jaw dropping open, so utterly stunned she completely lost her bearings.

"What did the assistant just say? I didn't quite catch that. Say it one more time."

Kurt's voice, thick with complex emotion, rang out from the phone's speaker.

"Ah, um, this, I didn't mean..." Polly fumbled her words, nearly biting her own tongue. "Ahhhhh, Kurt! I was just running my mouth. I swear, I have absolutely no other intentions toward Boss!"

"My orientation is totally standard. I like men."

"Kurt, please—"

"That's enough."

Seeing Polly so terrified she looked ready to drop to her knees, Ebony Fox took pity on her. "Alright, you can go prep the things we need."

"Thank you, Boss." Polly nodded miserably, looking like she was about to cry. "I'll never run my mouth again."

Ebony Fox smiled without saying a word.

The girl talked a big game, but her courage was the size of a sesame seed.

After Polly left.

Ebony Fox looked at the wickedly grinning man on the screen and softly warned, "Don't scare her like that."

"Alright, my girlfriend has spoken. I'll definitely be nice from now on."

Kurt narrowed his eyes, letting out a soft chuckle. "After all, she was our matchmaker."

Truth be told.

If Polly hadn't helped him from the inside, who knew how long it would've taken to catch this little fox.

"Alright, alright."

Hearing him run his mouth again, Ebony Fox couldn't help but recall the dream she'd had the night before, her cheeks flushing slightly.

Afraid he'd notice something was off, she turned slightly away. "Get back to work. I'm heading out."

"Wait."

Kurt quickly stopped her, putting on a completely serious face. "I haven't given you my daily weather report yet."

Ebony Fox looked confused for a few seconds. Before she could say anything, Kurt spoke first.

"The weather is beautiful today, and I miss you terribly."

"How are we supposed to talk with you down there?" Ebony Fox pursed her lips. "Get up. It's not good for the kid to see."

"Yes."

Wayne helped his wife to her feet, wiping away his tears. "Ms. Ebony Fox, the hospital staff told us you paid for all the follow-up treatments as well."

"We'll definitely pay you back, I promise."

"Ms. Ebony Fox, if you ever need me to testify against Annie, I'll do it in a heartbeat."

Wayne promised solemnly, "Even if it means I go to prison, I'll help you."

"If you go to prison, what happens to your child?" Ebony Fox's lips twitched upward slightly, her voice low. "The situation hasn't deteriorated to that extent. Besides, you're a victim too."

"Just focus on resting."

Ebony Fox finished speaking indifferently and turned to leave.

As she reached the doorway, she bumped right into Monique, who had just finished eavesdropping and was trying to sneak away.

Ebony Fox: "?"
