Meeting Ebony Fox's gaze, Monique snapped her head away, using her hair to shield her face.
Keeping her head down, she briskly walked forward, muttering under her breath, "You can't see me, you can't see me."
Ebony Fox had excellent hearing, not to mention Monique was muttering quite loudly.
She pressed her lips together and called out to Monique's retreating back. "You're heading toward the operating rooms, Aunt Monique."
Monique halted in her tracks, standing there completely torn for a long moment.
Weighing the option of awkwardly wandering into an operating room against facing her embarrassment, she slowly turned around to face Ebony Fox.
Clutching her handbag and in her low heels, she walked back over to the younger woman.
"Let me just state for the record, I wasn't eavesdropping on purpose just now. I was just here for a check-up and happened to walk by."
Monique threw a guilty glance at Ebony Fox, her voice clearly flustered.
"Mhm."
Ebony Fox nodded slightly, speaking at a leisurely pace. "The check-up center is in Building A. The inpatient ward is in Building B. There's actually quite a bit of distance between the two."
Instantly exposed, Monique's composure nearly cracked.
"Fine, I admit I came here on purpose." Monique tipped her chin up, looking Ebony Fox straight in the eye. "But before I got here, I had no idea you'd be here too."
The online reports about Wayne and his family were absolutely tragic.
Articles claimed all their medical fees were funded by donations, and that the couple was splitting a single pastry and a bottle of water just to save money.
They said Wayne had just gotten out of surgery, sweating bullets from the pain in his right hand.
Yet, due to money issues, he was gritting his teeth and refusing painkillers.
She just wanted to see what the situation was really like.
Who knew that seeing it in person would prove it was genuinely devastating.
When she remembered that Annie was the one who caused this, Monique felt a chill run down her spine.
In that moment...
She felt a genuine sense of relief that Ebony Fox had exposed Annie's true colors.
"My being here doesn't stop you from visiting the patients." Ebony Fox replied neutrally, picking up a sapphire earring from the floor and handing it to her. "You dropped something."
"Huh?"
Monique reached up to touch her ear; it had indeed fallen off.
"Thanks." She took it back, looking quite uncomfortable as she thanked her.
A staff member reported respectfully.
"Good."
Kurt nodded. He stood up, walking toward the mountain ridge, and gazed at the drones hovering in the air before giving the command. "T-minus ten seconds. Launch."
Shortly after.
The countdown concluded, and over a dozen drones slowly ascended into the sky.
Among them, some were carrying heavy-duty supplies.
Others flew toward a water source to extract water and return.
There was even a manned drone model being tested.
The myriad capabilities of the drones were all being tested simultaneously.
The test was scheduled to last about half an hour.
During this time.
Kurt sat at his computer, headphones on, intensely monitoring the flight data.
