James kept his jaw tight, completely ignoring the man. His profound, dark eyes remained fixed on the rising mushroom cloud over the distant hill. Seeing that James had no intention of speaking, the mercenary let out an awkward chuckle and slinked away, realizing he was only embarrassing himself.
Withdrawing his gaze, James took long strides toward the other side of the deck. A mercenary leader stood there, a pair of high-powered binoculars hanging around his neck.
"Lend me those binoculars," James demanded.
The mercenary paused. He originally had zero fondness for this live-in son-in-law, but he knew perfectly well that if it weren't for James, he would have been blown to bloody pieces just moments ago. Moreover, if James had truly wanted to pull any tricks, he could have easily escaped during the chaotic crossfire. There had been absolutely no need for him to stay behind and save their lives.
Realizing this, the mercenary cheerfully pulled the strap over his head and handed the binoculars over. "Take them, Mr. Nelson. When we get back to camp, the boys and I will definitely put in a good word for you with the boss. He definitely won't be as guarded and harsh with you as he was before."
James grabbed the binoculars and immediately brought them to his eyes, scanning the direction of the destroyed hill. Through the lenses, all he could see was a blinding curtain of swirling dust and air distorted by the searing heat. It was a hazy expanse of white, completely obscuring anything that might have survived.
His brows knitted tighter together. He couldn't shake a bizarre, lingering intuition about the hidden snipers who had provided cover fire from behind that hill. It was an indescribable sensation, like an invisible thread gently tugging at his heart.
The cargo ship had fully exited the active combat zone and was now cruising at maximum speed toward the cartel's central headquarters, nestled deep within the Caleba Delta.
Lowering the binoculars, James stopped looking. He casually tossed the equipment back to the mercenary leader and turned on his heel, disappearing into the ship's cabin.
On the other side of the region, under Will's expert navigation, Emmy's convoy twisted and turned through hidden routes. In no time at all, they successfully bypassed the outer war blockades and penetrated the inner belly of the Delta's coastal region.
The convoy finally came to a halt in a highly concealed canyon camp. This was the staging ground where the rest of the Dragonscale operators were stationed. Even the two separate mercenary squads Emmy had hired to search for James had all converged in this very spot.
The car door was pulled open from the outside, and Emmy slowly stepped out, holding onto the doorframe for support.
When the men in the camp got a clear look at the figure emerging from the vehicle, a collective gasp rippled through the crowd.
"Emmy?"
