Chapter 3
The next day was Jackson’s mom’s birthday. I showed up like I’d promised.
Our families still had no clue I wanted to call off the engagement.
Right now, they were all sitting together, sipping tea, chatting like everything was perfect.
The second Mrs. Winters saw me, she grabbed my hand with a warm smile.
“What happened yesterday? You got sick so suddenly and had to postpone the wedding. You scared me half to death! I thought maybe Jackson did something to upset you.”
“But now that you’re feeling better, let’s lock down a new date as soon as possible.”
I was about to figure out how to explain when I saw Jackson walk in-arm in arm with Penelope.
“Mrs. Winters, this is my gift for you. Happy birthday.”
Penelope held out a poorly wrapped gift box.
Mrs. Winters glanced at it. Didn’t take it.
This was a private family gathering. She obviously didn’t want some “outsider” here.
But Jackson grabbed the box himself. Inside was a cheap-looking handmade bracelet.
He held it up like it was some kind of treasure and presented it to his mom.
“Penelope made this bracelet for you by hand. It’s so thoughtful. Way more valuable than something someone just bought with money!”
He was talking about me-and the $300 million jade screen I’d given them.
Mr. and Mrs. Winters’ faces went pale, but they didn’t say anything. They just shot Jackson a sharp glare.
My chest tightened with irritation. My gut told me this birthday party wasn’t going to be simple.
Sure enough, the second Mrs. Winters brought up our wedding again, Jackson cut her off.
He raised his hand-fingers laced with Penelope’s.
“Mom, Dad-I’ve decided. I’m marrying Penelope.”
“Are you out of your mind?!”
A cup flew straight at Jackson, barely missing his face.
“You’re already engaged to Scarlett! Calling it off now-what does that make you look like?! Do you have any respect for her at all?!”
Mr. Winters was fuming, pointing at Jackson and tearing into him.
“Penelope and I are in love! She took care of me when I was drunk. She even donated her bone marrow when I was in danger! But what about
Scarlett?!”
