This time, her sleep was dreamless.
When she woke the next morning, her head was clear. Thinking back to the dream, she figured it was just the alcohol and the conversation about high school that had triggered it.
That day, she and her professor were scheduled to visit the home of an elderly traditional dancer on the island. Their host was supposed to take them, but he had to leave the island for an emergency and asked his older brother next door to guide them instead.
So, Emma’s group went next door to find the brother. It suddenly occurred to Emma that this was the guesthouse where Bart had stayed all those years ago. She took a moment to look around the place more carefully and noticed it seemed older, probably the first guesthouse established in the village.
Its claim to fame was a large cabinet filled with guestbooks from over the years. That was one of the B&B’s defining features—it was clean, but every corner was steeped in history.
Standing in front of the cabinet, Emma wondered if Bart might have left a message in one of them. But they were about to leave; there was no time to search through the massive collection.
“Are you looking for Bart’s entry?” a voice asked from behind her.
Emma turned to see Theodore and Anna coming out of their room. Anna smiled at her from behind Theodore.
She gave Anna a polite nod before answering Theodore. “I was just thinking about it, but… we don’t have time.”
“I already found it,” Theodore said.
“You did?” Emma felt a spark of anticipation. She wanted to see it.
“I took a picture.” Theodore pulled out his phone and opened his photo gallery. But just as she leaned in for a closer look, he pulled the phone away.
