Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 540

Theodore met her gaze and remained silent for a long moment.

Emma nodded. “I guess you don’t know either.”

“No, I do,” Theodore said quickly.

Emma waited for him to continue.

“I know he didn’t have a girlfriend.” Theodore looked down with a faint, unreadable smile. When he looked up again, the smile was still there. “But as for who the dancing girl was, I have no idea.”

Emma frowned, thinking hard. She pictured the young man from her dream, speeding along the coastline, his presence so full of life and untamed energy that she could still feel it, even now that she was awake.

“What’s wrong?” Theodore asked, noticing her strange expression.

Emma sighed. “I don’t know how to explain it. People are so contradictory sometimes. He was such a good person, and it feels like a shame to think he went through life alone, without anyone to love him. But then, on the other hand, he was so wonderful that if a girl had loved him, how heartbroken would she have been to lose him? How long would it have taken her to heal? So I can’t decide if it would have been better for him to have had a girlfriend or not.”

“How do you know he was a good person?” Theodore asked with a slight grin. “We weren’t in the same class. I only knew him because we played basketball together. You barely knew him at all.”

Emma rolled her eyes. “Better than you, anyway.” Seeing his face, and with Anna conveniently out of earshot, she couldn't resist a jab. “Why do so many good girls fall for players like you? God must be blind.”

An awkward look flashed across Theodore’s face. He forced a smile. “Emma…”

Just then, her professor and Cindra arrived. Emma grabbed her things and headed out with them. Cindra turned back to wave goodbye to Anna and Theodore. “See you tonight for drinks! It’s a plan.”

Emma froze. *What?*
