Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 544

Allen immediately grew tense, positioning himself between Emma and the box as he knelt to inspect it. Inside, an object was wrapped in layer upon layer of protective packing.

After peeling everything away, he finally uncovered it—a pottery jar.

“Miss Emma, it’s a jar.” Allen reached inside, feeling around for anything dangerous like a bomb, but only found a small card. “This is for you.”

Emma had already recognized the pot. She knew at once who had left it there. It was the very one she had admired at the market in Ireland but couldn't buy. The only person who could have bought it and had it delivered here was Theodore—he must have seen her fawning over it last night.

She looked down at the card. In his familiar handwriting was a single sentence: *So you have one less regret in life.*

It was signed: *Theodore, Anna.*

She could even tell that the name ‘Anna’ was written in Anna’s own script, not his.

He was telling her it was okay to accept it, a gift given openly from both of them. He hadn’t just seen her; he must have overheard what she said. She and Cindra had been so engrossed in the market that they hadn't even noticed him pass by.

“Miss Emma, what should I do with this?” Allen asked, having guessed who sent it.

Emma knelt beside the jar, studying it for a long moment. What could she do? She still absolutely loved it.

“Let’s bring it inside.” The man was infuriating, but the jar was perfect.

She had Allen place it in an ideal spot in the living room, then spent a good while just admiring it. It felt good to receive the gift, but she couldn’t just accept it without a word. She could ignore Theodore, but she owed Anna nothing but kindness. The girl was too sweet.

After some thought, she decided she had to at least say thank you.

Her trip to Ireland meant she had missed Christmas in London, but since it was still the holiday break, she could go home to celebrate the New Year with her family. She had just stopped by her house to pack a few things.

After gathering the gifts she’d bought for her family, she had Allen drive her home. In the car, she handed him three presents. “Happy New Year. These are for you and the team. Could you give them their gifts for me?”

“Oh, I couldn’t…” Allen said, looking a little embarrassed.

“It’s nothing. You all work so hard,” Emma insisted, placing the gifts on the passenger seat.

“Thank you, Miss Emma,” Allen said.

Emma smiled. “You’re welcome.”

After Allen dropped her off at her aunt’s house, Emma walked inside to find her grandmother rushing to greet her. “You’ve gotten so thin!” she exclaimed, looking her over.

Emma wondered just how plump she had to be for her grandmother to think she wasn't too thin. She sighed and hugged her grandmother playfully. “But I ate so much meat on this trip! I must have gained ten pounds. Any more and I won’t be able to dance.”

Her grandmother pinched her cheek with a disapproving glance. “Doesn’t look like it to me.”
