If Karl and Evelyn hadn't been so relentlessly persistent, this marriage would never have happened.
After a long silence, Karl finally spoke, letting out a heavy sigh. "You only dare to hurt her this much because you know she loves you. But one day, when she wakes up, stops loving you, and walks away for good, your regret won't save you."
"I will never regret it," Xavier fired back. "She was never the woman I wanted to marry!"
Without another word, Xavier stormed toward the exit—and locked eyes with Evelyn.
She was standing quietly by the doorway, her hands clutching the fresh flowers.
She looked at him. She had wanted to say something, but her throat felt blocked, refusing to let a single syllable out.
Xavier's gaze faltered for a fraction of a second before he walked past her, his face completely expressionless.
"Xavier!"
Karl chased after him, but stopped dead when he saw Evelyn's pale face at the door. He instantly knew she had heard everything.
"Evelyn..." Karl looked at her with deep worry, flooded with regret. He should have held his tongue and scolded Xavier in private so she wouldn't have to suffer through this.
"Grandpa, I'm fine. You don't need to worry about me," Evelyn forced a bright smile, trying her hardest to pretend it didn't hurt.
Her brave face only made Karl feel worse. Such a wonderful girl, and yet his grandson had completely lost his mind, hopelessly fixated on a dead woman.
Karl reached out and firmly grasped her hand. "Don't you worry, my dear. I will never authorize a divorce. You are too good for him. Once he finally realizes everything you've done, he'll be kicking himself. He's my grandson. I know him."
Evelyn nodded, but her chest felt tight, like it had been stuffed with wet cotton. Over the past three years, wasn't that exactly how she had been comforting herself?
The belief that Xavier would eventually fall in love with her and give her a real marriage had been the carrot dangling in front of her all this time.
