Chapter 2 Contract Marriage
Seeing Chloe’s face, Adrian froze. He realized he’d gone too far.
“I…” he started, guilt flashing across his expression.
“I just wanted you to put these on.” Chloe cut him off, holding out the goggles she’d been carrying. “The sun’s blazing, and it’s all snow ahead. Without them, you’ll go blind out here.”
Adrian stared, thrown by her calm explanation and the goggles in her hands.
After a moment, he finally took them.
“Sorry,” he muttered, rubbing his forehead. His voice was rough. “I was just… too worried.”
“It’s okay. A life’s on the line. I get it.” Chloe shook her head.
Seeing Chloe’s forced smile, Adrian’s chest tightened.
“Chloe…” he blurted without thinking.
“Just go. She needs you. Don’t waste another second,” Chloe cut him off, pushing him toward the door.
Thinking of Natalie in danger, Adrian spun around and bolted.

“Wait for me!” he shouted back, then disappeared from sight.
The moment his anxious figure was gone, Chloe’s smile fell
apart.
In the two years they’d been married, Adrian had always been steady, collected–untouchable. She’d never seen him like this before.
So this is what love looks like. Just… not for me.
She sighed and returned to the hotel room. Her earlier excitement had vanished without a trace.
Her marriage to Adrian was like something out of a soap opera, yet arranged with cold precision.
She’d met Adrian through her mentor, Sebastian Lane, a professor at Harvard Medical School.
Sebastian was a family friend of the Fosters.
When he learned that Adrian’s grandfather, William
Foster, was pressuring Adrian to get married, he thought of introducing his star student to him.
That star student was her, Chloe.
The Harts weren’t quite on the Fosters‘ level–a New York 2/4

dynasty with a century of prestige–but they held their own in academia.
Her grandparents were Harvard’s earliest professors, and
many of New York’s elite had once been their students.
Her parents carried on the legacy as professors at Harvard Medical School.
As for her, she’d skipped three grades and earned double PhDs from Harvard Medical School.
Impressive, right? But when it came to the Fosters‘ standards for a daughter–in–law, it was just barely enough.
And so, she and Adrian went on a blind date.
When Chloe first met Adrian, her heart pounded with nerves
and excitement.
But she pulled it off, making their arranged first date look effortless.
“Ms. Hart, I’ll be blunt—I don’t want marriage. My grandfather’s just… pushing me.”
“Same here,” Chloe said with a sigh, forcing her expression
to stay calm. “My grandpa’s really sick. He wants to see me married before he goes, so…”

She gave a weak smile, convinced she’d found the perfect excuse for agreeing to this blind date.
Her grandfather really was ill, and he really did want her married–but that wasn’t why she came.
The truth was, she’d been in love with Adrian for ten years, ever since freshman year of high school.
“How about this, Ms. Hart? A contract marriage. Three years. After that, we divorce–call it irreconcilable differences. Would that work for you?”
“A… contract marriage?”
Chloe froze, staring at him as he nodded, dead serious.
