Chapter 169: He gets closer.

Leilani.

For several seconds, I simply sat there, with my hands balled into fists while I stared at Zevran like he had lost his mind— and maybe he has because what the fuck?

What the actual—?

I couldn’t respond, not to that stupid question. And I also didn’t want to sit here listening to him say things as infuriating as that to me simply because he— and his brothers— had come to my rescue for once.

Just once in their stupid lives!

It felt like he had selectively forgotten about the times they had hurt me in ways unimaginable. There were many times in the past where I’d been in worse situations than what Keisha put me through, and it had all been all thanks to them. So what the hell was wrong with his brain?

A moment passed between us, and when he finally realized that I wouldn’t respond, he looked away from me and heaved a sigh.

"I’m sorry I asked that." He murmured under his breath.

And maybe I should’ve understood. Maybe I should be nicer to him... but I couldn’t help but respond with a snarky; "You should be sorry."

He froze.

His eyes met mine in that instant and I gasped at the intensity of whatever shit it was that I found swirling in his dark eyes. He rose slowly to his feet and quietly marched over, his eyes never leaving my face even once as he muttered;

"You want to hate us—"

"I indeed do..." I responded, interrupting him; But that didn’t deter him. He continued;

"But you cannot. Leilani, I don’t know if you haven’t noticed but we are meant to be. The moon goddess paired us for a reason—"

"Yeah right, she did. And she selectively paired me with married men?!" I snapped. And as soon as I said that, he snapped his lips shut.

It suddenly looked as though the entire fight had been suddenly sucked out of him when his shoulders hunched over. He whispered; "You will never forgive that, right?"

"I don’t think I’ll ever forgive anything you all did." I answered truthfully, my voice breaking slightly when distorted memories from my past flashed across my mind.

I cleared my throat and shook my head, as if trying to dispel those dark times, and added; "...so it’ll be nice if you all stopped trying."

"Leilani..."

"I’m trying to be civil here—" I began to say but stopped when his hand shot out to wrap around my upper arm.

My eyes widened when that singular contact sent jolts of electricity shooting through my body and straight to my core. And even though he wasn’t holding onto me so tightly, I realized that I couldn’t fight back. I felt trapped.

I snapped; "Let go."

"You hurt us..." he whispered, his voice ice cold but pleading at the same time— and I don’t understand how that is possible. "You hurt us terribly, and even though that doesn’t justify what we did to you, we hurt you too. So why’s it that we ARE trying to put all of that behind us but you’re unwilling to do the same?!"

The laugh that wrenched free from my mouth was flat and devoid of any emotion. I laughed so much that my chest hurt; and I snorted; "I hurt you?"

"Yes, you did."

"Are you that dense?"

The insult left my mouth before I could stop it and I frowned when he didn’t even react to it. Instead. He simply nodded and hissed;

"If wanting you back means I am dense, then yes I am."

And that... that was the final straw. That cemented my belief that he was indeed crazy. I wrenched my arm free from his hold and pushed him away from me. And I didn’t realize how strong the force of my push was until he staggered backward with wide eyes.
